Question to Diane, Hi Diane, in a vid I had posted earlier of that fiddle tune, you had suggested plucking a string with the fingers (finger pushups ?) 10 times a day. I'm not sure if you meant each finger only 10 times a day or.....all fingers-10 times a day. Thanks ! :-)

This recording of Meditation by Fritz Kreisler and Carl Lamson from 1928 is touching me like no other. Unique sound, phrasing and articulation. For me, they work beautifully. What do you think?

Block Fingering and Intonation, part 2

Hello everyone!

Just recently I started to take private lessons so that I could get instant feedback on my quest to learn the violin and also to have a more professional one-on-one guidance on my performance. My instructor is steadily helping me work on things that I was unaware (i.e. Apparently I tend to tense my shoulder and thus I am experiencing problems on my wrist. A problem my instructor had to deal with as well) and other great things too (I'm finally getting a grip on rhythm and subdivisions). ;-)

One thing that I'm not being successful at is block fingering when playing descending notes (i.e. patterns such as playing D, C# and B on the A string). I can play with individual fingers well an in tune, but if I try to do block fingering (recommended by my instructor and also suggested on the Suzuki Book 1) I can't get my fingers to be spaced correctly, specially first and second fingers, and thus whatever note I play with my first finger (B in my example above) the note is consistently too high (out of tune). I have been struggling with this for quite sometime and I am getting really frustrated. My instructor really wants me to get this mastered and I also understand that block fingering is helpful and effective when playing fast notes, but at my ripe age I just don't think that my fingers are trainable anymore. LOL

Can any of you, and Beth of course, suggest some exercises or advice? I finally got my "gripping" problem solved and now this. It feels as for every step forward I take, I have to take two steps backwards as well. LOL
