hellow, BETH,as you must know i am a beginner, and right now i'm practicing "string crossing"but when i am bowing, my bow starts bouncing and even though i have a good intonation, i don't know if i am bowing with a lot of pressure, or may be the bow hair is too tight, or my bow hold is not relaxed...i have no idea what i'm doing wrong , please help me!! |
Hi Beth and ViolinLab members, I have a musical background but am a very beginning violin student, and am looking for any advice on interleaving the beginning technique lessons with the Suzuki book 1 tutorials. I would like to create a lesson plan to help structure my progress, and would bet that someone in this group has been down this path before and could share pointers. Thanks in advance for any input! |
Hello Beth:
In reference to your video on fitting the shoulder rest: not all rests have a thick end. I think that my Everest is the same width at both ends.
One trait that may be more common is the profile curve of the rest: on most shoulder rests the end that has the curve that "swoops closest to the back of the fiddle" is the part that attaches to the bass bout (the bout on the G-string side). |

Jack, Ron, and Jego, your requests will guide my filming schedule. Here's my to-do list for next week:
address the scale practice make a tutorial for Sad Romance give some pointers for making playing on the G string a little easier finish Advanced Tone Production series and lastly finish Witches' Dance. Aah! It's nice to have it planned out. At times I get twisted in a knot deciding to what to do next. |
Is the sheet music included with Meditation tutorial? VIEW VIDEO |
Hi Beth, I need some help. I can't seen to locate your YouTube video of Sad Romance. I've searched with your name, sad romance and violin lab but it doesn't come up. I saw it once but it seems to be gone now. Any advice? Also I would like to thank you for all your wonderful videos at violin lab. After playing for only three weeks I found a local teacher and had my first lesson. She was most impressed with my technique and had many questions on how I learned proper bow hold, bowing and left hand technique. She watched me play simple gifts without looking at the music and told me to take the tapes off and we will skip the new student basics. I'm sure it helps that I play guitar and mandolin but I know I have progressed much faster having had your instruction videos to work with every day. I love this website. I travel, and It's great to be able to take your violin teacher anywhere. Thanks again. |

Has anyone read this blog before? It may be of some particular interest to Jack
https://vaughnvsviolin.wordpress.com/ it's kinda funny. his tagline is "I’ve given myself one year to master the violin." "As an adult beginner, I should be playing Twinkle Twinkle; instead, I'm playing Paganini's 24th caprice." Some people get really upset about his taking shortcuts, but you gotta give him props for the effort he puts in. |

I'm very impressed with how organized the resources section is layed out. Bravo Beth! |
Hi Beth, is bowing on plain gut strings really a lot different than on silver/aluminium covered gut strings and synthetic strings? I have heard it is different and that plain gut strings can be quite sensitive to pressure and contact point. I have just ordered some plain gut strings (D and A), will use a silver wound gut G and a steel goldbrokat E, I was 'in the mood' for experimenting with new strings and as I like 'mellow' rich stuff I thought I'd try plain gut for that 'old style' violin sound LOL. You can tell that since I decided not to sit any exams for a while I now have time to do some 'leisure' things with my violin hehehehe |
Hello Beth: I was wondering if you or any other professionals use Thomastik's "Dominant" rosin, and if so, what you think about it?
I've tried it multiple times, and always initially love the smooth sound it creates, yet later find that it requires too much pressure at slow bow speeds to make the string speak.
Also, do you recommend gently wiping the hair with a soft cloth after applying rosin, to remove any loose particles? VIEW VIDEO |
