What are your 'dreams' with the violin?

I know I have 2 of them, one of them sometimes I 'question' and wonder if I will 'really' achieve but I keep aiming for it, and that is to one day obtain the highest qualification one can obtain on the violin which is the 'fellowship'...

but then I have a more 'humble' dream, which 'hopefully' 'might' be more achievable, but even with this one I wonder if I will ever achieve it actually, and that is to one day be like this woman here in this YouTube video, she is my 'inspiration', I go and watch her videos (which were posted by her son) now and again and I sit and 'dream' that at the young age of 84 one day I might be just like her....entertaining my friends and neighbours with my violin :)

I really hope I can be like her when I 'grow young' :) <3

Of course i do also my daily praktice working on Beth`s great teaching units here on violinlab :-)  Now i'm playing just over three weeks, and i'm thinking about to buy another, traditional Violin. All Tips to improve my playing are preferable.

Thank You !

Hi Beth,

Would you recommend subscribing to The Strad?  At $25/issue and $110/year it certainly is up there as far as a magazine can cost.  Any thoughts?

Best,

Ray

Hi Beth (and all),

While viewing the vibrato videos I was wondering about how the use of shoulder support will affect how the vibrato motion is executed giving the fact that without the shoulder rest the left hand helps supporting the violin.

In other words, does players that don't use shoulder support execute vibrato the same way as players that use shoulder support? I venture to guess that in essence it should be same motion but maybe there is a subtle compensation due to the fact that the left hand is helping supporting the violin. (This is just my uneducated guess...)

Thanks!

Pedro

Hi Everyone,

A while back there was a discussion about the Yost Shifting studies. Colleen McCullough in her interview stated that she "practice her Yost religiously".  But alas, the book is out of print. However, lo and behold, it was on the MSLP website. I downloaded it and posted it in the Resources section. Look under Violin Lab Resource materials. I had to post it in two parts.

Happy Shifting ; )

Hi Everyone,

I need some advice.  If I 'only' the piano sheet music for a song, how do I transcribe it for violin.  Is it a direct transfer or do I need to change the notes some how?

Cheers,

Ray

I was in my local music shop at the weekend and came across a 3CD box set of recordings by Kreisler for only 3.00!  I guess that's around 5 USD!  OK, so the quality of the recording isn't great, and probably they're all available on YouTube, but for that price I couldn't resist!  For those in the UK, I picked it up in HMV...

Hi Beth, When I'm playing almost anything, unless it is directly engaged, I tend to extend my 4th finger way back, out of the way. I'm trying to break this habit, and have noticed that your student's fourth finger in this video is very quiet, well behaved. Do you have an exercise that might help me?

I can'n wait to play the violin passage of my own song finally on the real violin.

Until there, there are many practice sessions needed.  I did a careful experiment with this - Oh my! it sounds very nice !

The notes are not so tricky but the tempo is.

Here is my Song https://www.box.net/files#/files/0/f/71686179/1/f_644866781

Maybe if anyone interested to play the part himself - you are cordially invited !

Have a nice Weekend !
