I have been playing the beginning of Essential Elements Book 2   I'm up to the Bb major  and F major scales and it seems to be going well... Until I go back to the G or D major.  I have a hard time finding first finger locations and it also pulls my 4th finger way too low.  what can I do to better switch from one key back to the other.  Should I be keeping my hand in the same place as if in the G major and only move the first finger way back to get the Bb and Eb? That's really awkward.

Hi Beth,

What is the magic about grace notes? Do they come like, kind of involuntary act or does it have to be systematically learned? Is there any particular lesson, I mean step by step, to be practised to master playing the grace notes?

Thanks.
Best regards,

Bonny Mathew

Hi Beth,

In order to learn shifting I am learning Amazing Grace.  My question is, what do you think of using the open G string as a drone (or do you think another note would blend in more complimentary with this song).  The version I've got is 3/4 G major.

Best,

Ray

Beth kindly correct me if Iím wrong. To me, there is a difference in time-value when playing embellishment notes than when playing slurred notes, even when in both cases and due to the legato on top of them, should be in only one bow stroke.

It is my understanding that:

The embellishment notes take their time from the main note that carry them; in another words, you must deduct from the time-value of the main note in order to play the grace(s), mordent, the turn or any others in the group of embellishment notes.

Contrary to;

The slurred notes played also with only one bow stroke but long enough equal in time-value, to the sum of all the notes within the slur.

Is the above correct? Please advice.

Tricia

Hello everyone. Here's a video of me playing Are You Sleeping in A Major. I would really appreciate any piece of advice or suggestion as to improve my playing, because I haven't been doing the video tutorials for long, and I want to catch any improvements or bad habits as early as possible. Thanks :)

What are your 'dreams' with the violin?

I know I have 2 of them, one of them sometimes I 'question' and wonder if I will 'really' achieve but I keep aiming for it, and that is to one day obtain the highest qualification one can obtain on the violin which is the 'fellowship'...

but then I have a more 'humble' dream, which 'hopefully' 'might' be more achievable, but even with this one I wonder if I will ever achieve it actually, and that is to one day be like this woman here in this YouTube video, she is my 'inspiration', I go and watch her videos (which were posted by her son) now and again and I sit and 'dream' that at the young age of 84 one day I might be just like her....entertaining my friends and neighbours with my violin :)

I really hope I can be like her when I 'grow young' :) <3

Hi Beth,

Would you recommend subscribing to The Strad?  At $25/issue and $110/year it certainly is up there as far as a magazine can cost.  Any thoughts?

Best,

Ray
