I am currently without a violin. As a few of you know, I made my violin. Well, I was always curious how it stacked up to the professionals, so I recently jumped off my happy little island and took my freshly minted violin to a violin maker, of some 40 years. As I mentioned at the beginning I am currently without a violin. It is now in a few pieces on his table and Michael assurs me that it will sound better after he makes-a few adjustments?! I'll be using a rental until my happy little violin-will I recognize it?-is back home. Until then I'll keep a candle lit in the window.

My apologies if this has been posted before but I feel it is worth sharing. This is one of my favourite pieces of music and one that I am working on although I am a way off sounding like this. Beautifully performed...!

Hi!

Yesterday an opportunity arose, that just cannot be passed.

A string ensemble of players who have begun playing as adults is going to start practicing in september. Great thing about this is that it's not just the players practicing by them selves, but it's led and coached by a professional violinist! And best thing about it is: I'm invited! :)

Hopefully there will be enough people so it will really fly. I hear there's already one cello, several violins and a couple violas enrolled.

Now, as always in my posts, a question follows:
Now that there's still several months time before the ensemble starts, I have time to prepare. I don't know if preparation is even necessary because none of the players are experienced and we'll be coached, but I don't like to be totally clueless when it starts :)
So, any tips regarding how to prepare in this situation? To which skills should I pay more attention?

At least playing more 2nd violin parts with my son is propably a good idea. Problem is that it's difficult to motivate him to do that. I barely can get him to play his own homework...maybe some kind of bribery is going to take place ;)

Hi Beth, I've been working on Op. 74, No. 46 in the second Wohlfahrt book. This is where I've gotten with it so far.

Do you have any tips or suggestions ? I still need plenty of work on my shifting but it's better than it was. Those 4th finger shifts are a challenge ! I've also been working on my right shoulder. In one of your videos you said the shoulder should always be "heavy"...I'm not sure that was your exact word but I think I know what you mean by that and have been working on relaxing that shoulder and letting is sort of "hang" I have noticed a difference for the better when I do that.

Anyway...how's it look all in all ? This is a great etude for shifting practice and I like working on this one. Thanks Beth ! :-)

Hi Beth!

Have you or anyone on VL lab performed Adagio for Strings By Samuel Barber?

For those of you movie buffs, it's the song Played in the Oliver Stone's movie Platoon.

Well a picture and sound is worth more than a 1,000,000 words . . . .

Excellent video! Good introduction to using left hand. There is a site: video basic, which has an interactive first position link. I found this very helpful to be sure that I am in tune when not playing a ring tone. Thanks for the tips on keeping the quality of sound paramount. To that end, I'm combining previous lessons on open string and applying those tips to the other notes. I'm determined to be playing twinkle, as you say Beth-like a violinist, by June. I have a copy of Twinkle which was written in 1884 by Charles Dancla (1817-1907). This version is for four violins so I'll just pick one of the four and practice that one. Wish me luck.

hi BETH, it's Mercy again, with a doubt: i've been watching some videos about violin musicians, and i see that sometimes they don't use 2,3 or 4 fingers to play a note, they just use 1 finger for each note, and i was wondering if this was correct or not, bc, right now i'm learning notes with SUSUKI method and also ESSENCIAL ELEMENTS 2000 FOR STRINGS.. and they teach you to play certain notes using 1, 2, 3, or 4 fingers..what's the best thing to do?? becasuse i feel better playing with one finger on each note.

Please help me decide!

A friend of mine wishes for music at her birthday celebration. I have four short pieces ready (sort of) that hopefully work without piano. They are:

  • Etüde-Caprice by Barlowe in the style of Händel (this is actually for violin solo)
  • Gluck Melodie
  • Tango pour Madame
  • Leclair Tambourin from Sonata in D Major

I can play one or possibly two of these (videos posted below). Which ones do you recommend?

Beth, I'm having a lot of trouble playing on the G string. Very hard for me to get my fingers to work over there. Any pointers?
