I had the best time last night practicing with my daughter.  It came about because my husband wanted to go to bed early so he could go into work in the morning before it got really hot.  That's my practice room so i was "kicked out".

My daughter said "practice in my room with me." She plays a little flute so she can play in concert pitch and read the same music.  She's alot more advanced than me so she had no problem and I could check my intonation against hers.  It sounded so pretty when we were in tune.  I was asking her questions and somehow we came around to trills.  I don't do vibrato yet so we added trills to everything in Judas Maccabeus to add some color.  It was hilarious.  I've been working on that song for a while so that made it a whole lot less tedious.  Pumped me up for tonight's practice.

Hi, Beth. I'm currently doing the finger stretching exercises. My problem is, having to control the clenching of my thumb. As my thumb pushes forward, I can feel the pressure as well at the pointy finger's joint that is touching the finger board. Please advise, thanks.

Maintaining a Straight Bow #7: wow! great analogy with the 'punching' or 'dart-throwing' imagery - very powerful and helpful.

Thanks.

Is anyone else having problems with playing the videos? I just started a few weeks ago and everything played well. That is until a few days ago. Now I can't seem to get any videos to play. It can't be my computer because other web sites line YouTube work great.

I use olive rosin and once i used my teacher's rosin which is Satorri light brown colour, and I found it makes a bit different sound. Beth just said dark colour rosin makes a bit of sticky sound, is that the reason? My bow is really beginner's one. should i change it to other one or it doesn't really matter?

I thought I posted a comment yesterday but I don't see it so I will try again. I want to thank Beth for her recent video on detache bowing. We are all aware that allowing the elbow to drift to the right makes your bowing impossible. I use to have that problem to a certain extent. I was told by several professional players to practice against the wall and make sure the elbow stays still. I found that no matter how hard I worked I still couldn't bow well in the middle of the bow. So I had to bow in the upper third of the bow. The problem with that is a weak tone and a lot of tension. So the video on the "punch" bowing was a real revelation for me. It's interesting, to make a straight bow you have to "throw a curve", albeit a small one and in the right direction! Thanks again Beth! Enrique Lasansky
