As some of you know, I have been carrying my violin from home to work and back again on a weekly basis so that I can maximize my practice time. While the practice is great, carrying the violin around on public transportation is not much fun. Recently I decided that perhaps I should purchase a "practice" violin, so that I could leave it at work and thus stop carrying my nice violin around all the time.

Well, I didn't find the "practice" violin yet, but in my search I have come across Luis and Clark violins. Definitely not in my price range for a "practice" violin. But I was intrigued about the whole concept and what the sound would be on these violins. I, for one, am impressed. Their website (link in red above) has a lot of information and videos, and here is a sample of one of them being played. What do you think?

Hi Beth and everyone else on VLab. I have a small question about dynamics. When you have "alternative dynamics", (when there is a repeat and the dynamics are different each time. Ex. : F-P) if you don't repeat, then, in the Ex. above should you play Forte or Piano? n other words, when you don't repeat and there is an "alternative dynamic", should you play the supposed to first time indication or the supposed to second time dynamic? Hi every one on V Lab, I just learned O. Reiding's Concerto in B Minor and I was just wondering if anyone had a few places here I should look out for certain mistakes. Also, any additional tips on this piece would be appreciated. Thanks ahead.

Funny....I learned this song (Lesson 44, "Are You Sleeping") as "Frère Jacques" many, many, years ago in elementary school French class. At that time, I learned it in French, of course:

Frère Jacques, Frère Jacques, Dormez-vous? Dormez-vous? Sonnez les matines! Sonnez les matines! Din, dan, don. Din, dan, don.

Rough translation: Brother Jacob, Brother Jacob, Are you sleeping? Are you sleeping? Morning bells are ringing! Mornings bells are ringing! Ding, dang, dong. Ding, dang, dong.

Strangely enough, I first played this on the violin more than a year ago (long before I knew of Violin Lab), as it came back to my memory while practicing one day. I remember thinking that it would make a good practice exercise!

Maybe others here first learned it in French class, also!

Beth...I'm very excited x-] I'm actually starting to get a lovely vibrato..here and there, on occasion. It's been a good number of years banging my head against a wall with this and I think it's finally going to happen....Lord willing ! (dance,dance,hoot,dance,dance,jigga,dance...where's that dancing spiderman when you need him !)

I am a newer member who just started learning violin last year at age 48. My apologies if my questions have been answered before, but I didn't have much luck doing a search using the google method. I've been practicing & practicing and very focused on tone production, but I have a question about violin quality. I have a nice starter violin (priced around $700) that I am currently renting. I have reached the level where I can produce a decent tone on it, but when I listen to some violinists I admire, there tone just sounds so much more lush and full, especially on the A and E strings. Mine, while sounding nice, tends to have a more "tinny" quality that I would rather not have. I realize that experience and talent are the enormous differences between myself and these violinists I admire, but I would think that every once in awhile I would at least produce a comparable tone even by accident. To this point I haven't achieved that on the higher strings. I can't really afford a more expensive violin at this point but I'm wondering, how much of the tone I am hearing on mine is just the limit of perhaps, my bow quality and the quality of the strings on this violin? Would a different bow or more expensive strings make much of a difference for me or is the tone quality I seek there in my violin but I just haven't found it yet due to my lack of experience? Any comments would be appreciated.

This is great! I was wondering how the shifting in the middle looked because I couldn't quite grasp it. I have never shifted before so this was my first try. I'm so excited to learn somethng new. almost makes me feel like I can "play"! next stop... vibrato. well, maybe in a little while. lol

Allan, thank you for posting Beth's quartet's performance of Pachelbel Canon. They performed so well together and the sound is just heavenly. I listened to it several times. I wish that Beth would save this video in the library so that we can retrieve it from time to time when we need inspiration.

I am currently without a violin. As a few of you know, I made my violin. Well, I was always curious how it stacked up to the professionals, so I recently jumped off my happy little island and took my freshly minted violin to a violin maker, of some 40 years. As I mentioned at the beginning I am currently without a violin. It is now in a few pieces on his table and Michael assurs me that it will sound better after he makes-a few adjustments?! I'll be using a rental until my happy little violin-will I recognize it?-is back home. Until then I'll keep a candle lit in the window.

My apologies if this has been posted before but I feel it is worth sharing. This is one of my favourite pieces of music and one that I am working on although I am a way off sounding like this. Beautifully performed...!
