Hi Beth and Violin Lab community,

I have been doing self study (due mostly to financial issues) and am really struggling with setting up my daily lesson plan. I have lots of books; method, etudes, technique, etc. But my lessons feel scattered even when I plan them carefully. I'm also finding that there are so many little things that I need help with as I practice. I plan on getting a teacher again as soon as that's feasible, but in the meantime, any suggestions?

Hi Beth!

Have you shot anything on fast bowing? I couldn't find myself.

I was just youtubing around for some fiddle tunes and found a simple and fun tune, but to play it properly, it's going to take some serious speed practice.
The tune is Irish washerwoman, here's one sample I found from youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aZJtmJkAFQ

I also found free sheet music for it and already spent a couple of hours memorizing it, now all I need is "some" practice and speed ;)

If someone is interested, here's the sheet I found:
https://www.petecooper.com/cifptunes/irishwasherwoman.pdf

Like I said, very simple, but fun!

Hi!

About switching rosin from brand A to brand B... should I clean the bow hair of the old rosin somehow or just start applying the new rosin on top of the remains of old rosin?

So I put Obligato strings on my violin today.  They really made an amazing difference!  My violin seems to have a MUCH richer tone before.  My teacher even commented on it so I don't think it's just my wishful thinking...lol!  Now to get used to playing on them.

What brand of strings do you all favor?

I have a silly question.  Has anyone out there in cyberland ever played violin with acrylic nails?  I want to try them but i'm not sure if they will be too long or get in the way.  I wouldn't get them very long, biut I don't know how long is too long.  My natural nails don't grow very well.

Oh boy... I think I'm addicted! :-)  I should be working on editing the images from this past wedding and high school senior shoot but it is raining... and I really don't feel like working.  Soooo..... I am having a very nice cup of hot tea and am practicing my violin instead.  Good thing I'm my own boss.... lol!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful day no matter what the weather is like in your area!

Oh THANK YOU Beth for printing the note names on the notes !! I'm just going through your explanation of your scale rounds and liking very much what I'm hearing. One thing that has been difficult for me is to remember the note "names". I know where to play them but most of the time I don't know who they are. First position I've got but anywhere else and I get lost...so...thank you ! I'll be printing all that out when I get on my other computer and tomorrow morning I'll take a good look at what you've got there. :-)
