Austin in July.
Just found out my work schedule for next summer and have discovered that I won't be able to come to the gathering in Austin -- I'm really disappointed as I usually come to Texas in the summer anyway, so I'll be there a few weeks later! :-(
I've seen bits and pieces regarding the gathering in various posts, but was wondering, Beth, if you could set up a section on the site specifically for this event - for people to exchange ideas, plans, etc.  Do you think you might be able to broadcast any of it?  I would love to somehow participate even if I can't be there in person.
By the way -- I've used VRBO - vacation rentals by owners -  in the past and have been happy with the places I've rented, if you're all looking to rent a place together. Ciao, Jane

Hey all.

Okay, so I'm not looking for a new violin yet; it'll be a year this Christmas that I've had my current violin. I'n still enjoying it quite a lot, and I don't need a new one yet.

But I know that mine isn't that expensive, and I have been looking at other violins because I want to see what else is out there.

However, I don't know how to spot a good violin online...
So, I was hoping that you guys could help me and tell me if this violin is good? How do you tell, and what seems good or bad about it? Would it be wise to purchase it?

Like I said, I'm not looking to buy it. I'm more so using it as an example.
However if I was asked to buy one, I would most likely choose this one haha.

So any help/tips would be awesome. Thanks!

P.S. - I got my same violin from this site, as left handed violins are very rare in this world...  :(

Here's the link.

(P.S. - I would get the cheapest strings as I wouldn't get any of those ones. i would just buy new ones from a local store. and i would get the most expensive bow and aquamarine/black snake case, coming out to a total of about 1 083 $. Good choice or no?)

Hi Beth,

This is a question for me to work on later but to get things going Paganini wrote a song which would played on one string.  Do you know of any other songs designed to be played on one string?  Paganini would be somewhat daunting for a newbie.

Deck the Halls Not really a question but an observation. I like these videos because I can watch how you organize your fingers before placing them. In the places you use "block fingering," you prepare the "block" but you don't actually put those fingers down; just the one that will be played. I think block fingering is what causes most of the tension in my left hand because i actually put pressure on all of the fingers as I was taught in elementary school. When you are just hovering, there can be no tension. Something for me to work on, thanks.

I thought I would introduce myself to the community.
I started playing the viola two weeks ago and having terrorising/tortured the entire household, I thought it was time to look somewhere for some lessons!
The videos have been very helpful so far, and I looking forward to getting to know you all, and to improve my playing.

I just wanted to say that I had a really great lesson today!  Somewhere over the past week some things have finally "clicked" in my head and now it is showing in my playing.  Even my teacher commented on how much better I seemed to be today versus last week.  I know it is in part to everyone here at VL!  Your encouragement has really helped me immensely.  THANK YOU ALL!!  :-)

I'm also really happy that things seem to be getting better with my teacher.  Maybe I was just frustrated with my inability to understand her but it seems the past two weeks it has really improved.  I feel like I'm over a hump!! lol

Ok, enough from me... just wanted to share! :-)

Dear all, this is my current version of Bach Partita in E major, Gavotte en Rondeau. It is for the ABRSM exam on December 4th. I appreciate your time watching and your feedback.

When recording, I set the "gain" on low because with the normal setting on "high" there were a lot of harsh noises. Hope you can turn up the volume high enough to hear it. It works on my system, at least.

This is only to let you know that there are some answers in your thread of November 14, 2011 in reference to the concert on February 18, 2012, but something is not working the way it usually works.
