Beth,  what do you think of starting a "file" for tunes that members who will be at the workshop can share with one another before the event ?

I'm thinking that we're going to be very busy at workshops and performance events and the like....which will be absolutely "wonderful".....but there may be some downtime in between, or at the beginning/end of the days when we'll have time to just "hang" around at the house or elsewhere.   It would be fun to pull out the fiddles and "jam" and even more fun for everyone if we have tunes that we've had a chance to go over and practice a little before hand.

If folks could post tunes here that they'd like to share, then we can download/copy them and have a chance to work on them a bit so we feel more confident come July.  It's a lot more fun and less frustrating to playing along with a group when you're somewhat familiar with the music.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't think that a full day of playing music, going to workshops and playing more music.....will keep me away from that thing during the times I get a chance to just sit and vegg...lol.    I could be wrong about that.....but I don't think so <:-\

Hello Everyone,
Heres a new topic as far a I can tell. The infamous dreaded "bouncing bow" any thoughts, resources on its cause/method of eradication? It is much less frequent than when I started 3 years ago, but every once in a while it will rear it's ugly head and destroy the beautiful melodic line I'm trying to create.
Also does anyone know of a way to search more efficiently for topics covered in this websight. I hope to meet some of you at the workshop this summer.

Hi Beth,

Just wanted to share with everyone my first recital/duet with my 8 year old son. I've started playing about 10 months ago and am almost finished with Suzuki Book 1 with your help. This was probably the most nerve wrecking 2 minutes of my life...but it was worth the fun times spent with my son. Just wanted to say thank you and any criticisms are welcomed.

Is anyone else as excited as I am  about the workshop?  I think i'm obsessed!

I have a question for Beth.  Would it be possible to rent a violin while we're there?  I really don't want to take my violin on a plane. I'm afraid it will get damaged or lost or won't fit.  I'm thinking of baggage fees, too.

I'm hoping other people want to "go in" on one of the houses.  That's a great thing if we can all ride together and save renting a car.  I can't wait to meet everyone.

Hi Beth,

While listening to you, Hillary Hahn, and others play a song there 'feels' like a push to the next note.  Like a good page-turning novel you just have to know where the story is going.  The listener also knows that the last note is the last.

So my question is there a technique that we could use so that our songs have a similar 'push' or inevitability about them?

Cheers,

Ray

How much is my violin worth?

I have 2 violins, and I'm curious to know how much they are worth. Is the only way to find out is by taking it to an appraiser? Or can I get an idea by looking into the maker?

Violin #1: Erich Werner, Beigenbaumeifter, Bubenreuth, Made in Weftern, Germany, No. 066503, 227W

Violin #2: (As far as I can read) R.P. Gross, New Orleans, LA 1937

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for putting up the Red Red Rose tutorial Beth!  I just started learning it and love this piece, and it is perfect for beginning shifting, which is right where I am at!

I wondered if it would be possible to put a bug in your ear for a request, that is if there is enough interest and if it would not be too much trouble.  I figure it doesn't hurt to ask!  Could there be an easy harmony bit added to it so that 2 violins could play as a duet?  That would be so lovely- but I wouldn't know how to go about doing it right.

How to practice this rhythm?

We play excerpts from West Side Story in orchestra, and it has a long passage of sixteenth notes, in which only the second and fourth are sounded and the first and third are pauses. So it is a fast and long passage of synchopation. The notes are easy, scale-likechanging per quarter note. How do I practice this?

Snakes on a Plane - Violin style

I've had to think long and hard before posting this as it contains a phrase that some may find less than appropriate.  But since the phrase has entered our pop-cultural lexicon, I thought "let's give it a try - I can always delete it later if need be".  Those with a liberal sense of humor, read on...
