Red, Red Rose

Beth. I've heard that tune before!  It was originally written by Robby Burns, the great Scottish poet of the 1700's.  Beautiful tune, well played!!

Buried in one of my other recent posts, a few of us were talking about the community orchestra's that we play in (or would like to one day!)  And I thought it might be nice to pull those out in a separate thread.

So, if you are a member of a beginner string group / orchestra / ensemble etc, and by way of inspiration for us all, would you share the website address and location it serves?  There may be other Violin Lab members in those areas who are not aware of the opportunities on their doorstep!

To get things going, here are two I know of in the UK:

https://www.ellso.org/  - East London Late Starters Orchestra (I think JoJo used to go here?)
https://www.ylss.org/ - Yorkshire Late Starters String (rehearses in Leeds)

Simon

(PS - hope this isn't considered inappropriate advertising?!)

I just got my superstudies book 1. The last line one #1 last 2 notes is a D note. I noticed in the video you use 4th finger down the neck, I alittle confused how to play this as a harmonic. Are you playing 3rd finger D and 4th finger as well. Thanks

Can anyone help me remember:  I responded to a recent post with a "That will make a great next tutorial!"  I can't remember what it was in reference to, nor can find the post where I typed it.  Aahrg, and embarrassing.

I spent the morning yesterday with the Yorkshire Late Starter Strings (www.ylss.org), which as the name suggests is a string orchestra for adult beginners.  It was the first time I've played violin in a large group and it was a fantastic experience!  Anyone who has the opportunity to join such a group should go for it!

As well as being my first 'orchestra' experience, I realised it was also the very first time I've played sitting down!  Straight away I had a problem with playing on the E string at the tip of the bow as the heel and my hand kept hitting my right leg!  Does anyone have any tips for playing the violin sitting down to maintain a good posture, not get in the way of your stand partner, have a good sight line to the conductor and music, and not hit your leg with the bow!?

Thanks!
