Patricia

Beth kindly correct me if Iím wrong. To me, there is a difference in time-value when playing embellishment notes than when playing slurred notes, even when in both cases and due to the legato on top of them, should be in only one bow stroke.

It is my understanding that:

The embellishment notes take their time from the main note that carry them; in another words, you must deduct from the time-value of the main note in order to play the grace(s), mordent, the turn or any others in the group of embellishment notes.

Contrary to;

The slurred notes played also with only one bow stroke but long enough equal in time-value, to the sum of all the notes within the slur.

Is the above correct? Please advice.

Tricia

Hello everyone. Here's a video of me playing Are You Sleeping in A Major. I would really appreciate any piece of advice or suggestion as to improve my playing, because I haven't been doing the video tutorials for long, and I want to catch any improvements or bad habits as early as possible. Thanks :)

What are your 'dreams' with the violin?

I know I have 2 of them, one of them sometimes I 'question' and wonder if I will 'really' achieve but I keep aiming for it, and that is to one day obtain the highest qualification one can obtain on the violin which is the 'fellowship'...

but then I have a more 'humble' dream, which 'hopefully' 'might' be more achievable, but even with this one I wonder if I will ever achieve it actually, and that is to one day be like this woman here in this YouTube video, she is my 'inspiration', I go and watch her videos (which were posted by her son) now and again and I sit and 'dream' that at the young age of 84 one day I might be just like her....entertaining my friends and neighbours with my violin :)

I really hope I can be like her when I 'grow young' :) <3

Hi Beth,

Would you recommend subscribing to The Strad?  At $25/issue and $110/year it certainly is up there as far as a magazine can cost.  Any thoughts?

Best,

Ray

Hi Beth (and all),

While viewing the vibrato videos I was wondering about how the use of shoulder support will affect how the vibrato motion is executed giving the fact that without the shoulder rest the left hand helps supporting the violin.

In other words, does players that don't use shoulder support execute vibrato the same way as players that use shoulder support? I venture to guess that in essence it should be same motion but maybe there is a subtle compensation due to the fact that the left hand is helping supporting the violin. (This is just my uneducated guess...)

Thanks!

Pedro

Hi Everyone,

A while back there was a discussion about the Yost Shifting studies. Colleen McCullough in her interview stated that she "practice her Yost religiously".  But alas, the book is out of print. However, lo and behold, it was on the MSLP website. I downloaded it and posted it in the Resources section. Look under Violin Lab Resource materials. I had to post it in two parts.

Happy Shifting ; )

Hi Everyone,

I need some advice.  If I 'only' the piano sheet music for a song, how do I transcribe it for violin.  Is it a direct transfer or do I need to change the notes some how?

Cheers,

Ray

I was in my local music shop at the weekend and came across a 3CD box set of recordings by Kreisler for only £3.00!  I guess that's around 5 USD!  OK, so the quality of the recording isn't great, and probably they're all available on YouTube, but for that price I couldn't resist!  For those in the UK, I picked it up in HMV...
