The optimal sounding point is in-between the bridge and the fingerboard. If we play closer to the fingerboard the sound is quieter, more veiled and darker. The closer we get to the bridge, the more resonant, brighter and louder the sound becomes.It is important to establish your base level sound, which should be a very big resonant sound. To find the sounding point for that place your bow in the middle between the bridge and the fingerboard and then move it just a little bit closer to the bridge.Start with producing the sound with a substantial amount of bow weight, which will make the sound scratchy. Then just add the bow speed to get a very big healthy sound.Make sure you have a proper relaxed bow hold and then imagine you are turning a door knob counter-clockwise and adding a little bit of weight into your index finger. This is going to create a really wonderful friction that will help the bow hair grab the string and initiate the sound spontaneously.You want to get full and big sound with a bite at the beginning of the stroke.Make sure your hand is not collapsed and your fingers do not straighten.
