Bug List

Perhaps we need a thread to report bugs, or maybe just not knowing how things work. I click on the check box for my queue and favorites, but they do not show up on those respective lists. Is this a bug or do I need to do more than just check those boxes?

Yes....definitely like the separation ! I'll have to go back to my page to check out those other changes. The site is coming along rather nicely Beth ! :-)

Yes, me too, Anne. Also changed is the members home page. THe smaller "resources" link is now on the menu bar, so that resources button is different than the one one the public site. We also moved the current members list up to the menu bar as well (only viewable to members)

We removed the "become a member" so that current members wouldn't accidentally sign up again. Members will see a renewal option within a week of their expiration date.

Also if someone comments on a video, the link back to that video will be there next to the comment. I thinks that's it for the latest round of changes. The ordering function of the videos in the "queue" lists is still wonky, but still works.

Thanks for noticing.

Hi Beth, I like how the post within a topic are now nicely separated! It's a pleasure to read!

Great, thanks. I finally know what happened when I was copying embed codes and why the player sizes were microscopic. There still may be some more like that, but I know how to prevent that from now on.

Hi Beth, Video: Dr. Laurie Scott, part 5: Smooth String Crossings, I was unable to see. It is about 2mm x 2mm is size if that is any help. Finding all the videos extremely helpful and finding new muscles to stretch that I didn't know I had.

My mother used to sing that a lot.

Now for the test.

Hey, it works.

Thank you

That's html you're wondering about. I knew nothing about it as well, but there are little pieces of code you type before and after text to create the paragraphs

I can't "show" you, because it won't appear as the code, it will only make a pragraph

Go to www.webmonkey.com (I still can't remember the html code to create a link) and click the Reference Tab, then click on "html cheat sheets". Scroll down to where it says formatting.

You'll see a less than sign, a small case p, and then a greater than sign. That's the code to make paragraphs. You insert those 3 characters before the beginning of a new paragraph.

I have that same question Duane.

Duane Lucy
Posted: January 29, 2011
I noticed that some of you are able to create paragraphs, but it won't do that for me. Is there a secret. I think it is easier to read in paragraphs.

It's going along just fine. I can't imagine the incredible number of things that can happen when you dip into all of that....."stuff" ! I have a blog and I CAN go in and change format and stuff but I don't DARE ! Holy smokes...who knows what would happen ! lol Kudos to Tony !

I've noticed this too. Should be an easy fix. Tony emailed last night after he got home from a gig (He is also Austin's #1 Timpani player) and said everything should be fine now. When he installed the "cookies" which makes it so everyone stays logged in, he had missed a few files. He's still the best.

I haven't tried the bookmark feature yet....maybe I'll wait till it's all squared away..lol. One thing that would be nice to change when you get a chance Beth/Tony...would be how responses are posted to a comment. If a response is longer than the profile pic...it runs right on top of the previous response. If there was more spacing, at least another line, to separate each response I think that might be better. Responses look like they all run together sometimes.

Playing with the bookmarking: Sorry for the inconvenient bad news, but there are still slight glitches. Exactly the right topics are shown in the "bookmarked" view, but the counting goes awry (only two videos show, but it claims that 4 have been bookmarked, increasing this number each time I once more bookmark a topic that is already bookmarked.

Another thing: my expectation is that if I bookmark a topic, the tick will stay visible until I remove it and so un-bookmark. This is the way that the "fast list" works. But with bookmarks, when I have bookmarked a topic and return to the community list later, the bookmark tick has disappeared (but the topic appears correctly in the "bookmarked view". If I bookmark the same topic again, the topic stays in the "bookmarked view", appears only once there but the counter of bookmarked items increases. As it is, I can see no way to un-bookmark anything.

This is quite long-winded, but it would take too much time to make it shorter, as they say, and I am not sure if I could... Hope it provides some helpful information anyway.

I see you solved the duplication issue. Excellent! Now I am going to put it to the test with the bookmarking feature.

Beth Blackerby
Posted: January 26, 2011
Wow! I think when video is posted, the duplication thing happens, plus it was bookmarked!I'll leave up the 4 New Year's resolution topics so Tony can take a look.

Beth Blackerby
Posted: January 26, 2011
You're right about the bookmarking. It had been fine before. I think this definitely happened after we changed the log in function.

Beth Blackerby
Posted: January 26, 2011
Thanks Anne, and don't hesitate to "test" the site. Actually the more information we give TOny, the easier it is from him to fish out the bug. So far, I haven't had a bookmark issue, but it is possible that since the log in fix, a few things got messed up a long the way.

Anne aMaudPowellFan

Yes, Beth, I noticed that I stay logged in now. Very convenient! Thank you for fixing that.

Beth, I am glad that I didn't try to delete one of the double entries. I was tempted!

When I look at the list of topics in the community section, then the bookmark checkbox is checked nowhere. But only the topics that I had bookmarked at some point show up in the "only bookmarked" list. So there seems to be something wrong in the handling of bookmarks.

It is possible that I have checked my topic twice in the assumption that the checking didn't work the first time around, and that that has resulted in the double entry. So I am tempted now to check it again and see if I get three versions of the topic, but I'll resist and leave Tony to figure things out.

Beth Blackerby

I had that problem too Anne. Then, when I deleted one of them, they both deleted. Since I deleted them I had nothing for Tony to look at. And the saddest part was that it was our New Year's resolution discussion thread. I was sick to have lost that. Leave these up, so that Tony can take a look. Mine were bookmarked too. Did you try and unckeck the box to remove the bookmark? I'll look into that as well. Have you all noticed that you're staying logged in now? I think every month you'll have to log back in.

Undo a bookmark?

Is it possible to un-bookmark something? Thanks for any help.

Anne aMaudPowellFan

Double Entries

My recent contribution appears twice! I started a new thread with just text and then uploaded two videos as responses. The only thing that might be unusual is that I bookmarked the thread before uploading the videos. Sorry about that. Presumably a but?

Beth Blackerby
Posted: January 19, 2011
I'm sure that was my fault. Every time I upload a video to the hosting service, which is Viddler.com, I then have to take the code and embed it into the website. But, I change the parameters of the viewing screen, and sometimes I leave out a place value, so instead of being 640 pixels, I might input 64 pixels, which is what I bet I did. Thanks for catching it. I rarely go back to "proof". So you guys are my editor/proofers ; )

Hi Beth, another tech issue. I enjoyed watching your interviews with Colleen but the one on the classical style/mozart is just a little hard to see.....the video screen is TEEENNYYyyy....tiinny...also, on a few occasions while watching videos, I didn't have the check box list to the right so I wasn't able to put any in my favorites. I did leave the site and then come back in and they were there. Don't know if that's an issue with the site, or my computer but thought I would let you know. BTW...You and Tony are doing a great job getting this all up to snuff ! :-)

EMG "Fiddlebac....if you open another internet window and minimize both windows, you can look at both pages without having to tab back and forth."

True, but that takes more system resources in terms of memory, cpu, and page files.

Eileen

Thanks Anne, version 3.6.13 ! Fiddlebac....if you open another internet window and minimize both windows, you can look at both pages without having to tab back and forth.

Thank you, fiddlebac, for the suggestion of using two parallel tabs. Good idea!

Eileen, you find the version usually in the "About XXX" of any program XXX. In Firefox, the "About Firefox" entry is in the help menu. Not that it matters much, because your brower seems to work fine...

Eileen

Ah, thanks Beth ! I do like the reminders ! I've had those "you need to become a member" blurbs pop up at me and it's just no fun showing up all ready to learn and seeing THAT ! :-)

I like that we have a dedicated bug discussion thread going. I just got off the phone with Tony and we think the log in problem might have occurred when we implemented the https security certificate. He thinks he will be able to reset the browser timers (or something like that). About the comments on videos, I didn't completely think through the process, so once all the browser issues are fixed, we'll tackle that. Another thing: I will have and account link added to your home pages so you can see when your accounts expire. As is it is now, a week before accounts expire, a renewal button will magically show on your page so that you can renew at a discount. In addition, you will get a nice little automated email from Violin Lab (yours truly) inviting you to renew ;)

fiddlebac
Posted: January 16, 2011
Anne, for a work around, can you open a new tab in firefox (ctr-t) and bring up violinlab again (you will not have to log in again). Then find the discussion.

Of course you will have to switch from tab to tab but you would still be able to listen and read. Not a solution but it may help.

That was it!

I upgraded to the new version of Firefox 3.6.13 and all is well again in fiddlebac land.

Thanks Anne I did not even check for a new update.

Eileen

I don't know what version I have Anne....don't know where to look to find that info...

Anne aMaudPowellFan
Posted: January 16, 2011
I am using Firefox 3.6.13, and I can add videos to the queue and the favorites list, like Eileen describes.

Eileen
Posted: January 16, 2011
That's interesting....I use Mozilla Firefox and I don't have any trouble with the queue or the favorites. I go to the video and there's a list to the right with boxes to click. I click "favorites" or "queue" and it shows up on my home page. I've also used the "comments" box to make comments on the particular video I'm looking at. That box will just put your comment on the "community" page without the vid for reference, but Beth and Tony are working on that.

fiddlebac
Posted: January 16, 2011
Okay, I tried this with IE4. Adding to favorites and to my queue works with IE4, but still does not work with Firefox, at least with version 3.0.19.

fiddlebac
Posted: January 16, 2011
Nope, not working.

I tried to add arm vibrato to both the favorites and to my queue. Went back to home page and they were not there. Refresh did not work nor did logging out and back in. The browser is Firefox version 3.0.19.

Yes Anne, that was my thinking. I used to be a software architect in a past life and we always had a spot for bug reports. Also it keeps the technical stuff in one sport and the music everywhere else.

Question on linking from video to discussion

I just tried my proposed workaround, and it doesn't work. Supposedly that ties in with Beth's comment to Eileen's post, that we cannot see which video she is commenting.

By the way, I am using your thread, fiddlebac, to collect bug reports and questions. That is how you meant it to be used, isn't it? Don't want to hijack anyone's topics.

Question on linking from video to discussion

I am wondering how I can find the community discussion on a video that I am watching. I suppose I could post a bogus commentary, that would make the video plus its comments show up on the community page. I could then even delete the bogut comment, once I've read other people's comments. But I am wondering if there is a direct way?

Beth Blackerby
Posted: January 15, 2011
It should be working fine. I checked this out several times. If you check the 'my queue' box from the video library page, then click back to your home, you should see it in your queue. However, if you're on the home page and open a video from the Recently added list, then, because you're already on that page, you have to refresh it. Check again. It's good that you and everyone else are helping weed out the bugs.
