Ok, I waste money here and there on silly things, I now have a new motivation not to.....to save money to go to AUSTIN TEXAS! Yes, I have decided that one day I will come to visit your shop in Austin Beth :) It may sound stupid but although I always thought yeah 'its nice to see the world', I never had the 'spur' to do it as I never had anything I REALLY wanted to do which was not expensive. Now I know, I'd love to come and see your shop and meet you. I have a son who is 15 next month, he will want to come too. I am planning to stay about 3 days in Austin, Beth, can I ask you to let me know what would be good in Austin for my son to see/experience which is 'cheap'? (he's not into music unfortunately, he's rather a very common technological teenage of the millennium LOL) I've had a look on the internet it's full of hotels in Austin and it says 'near this near that location' but I would not know where to go, could you recommend which 'zone/area' to stay in? (I am looking into hiring a car but want to spend as little money as possible so will not travel to places to do sight-seeing etc). If I can combine my trip with a classical music event even better :) Emg, how far are you from Austin? maybe you will be able to catch up with me? ps I don't know at this stage when I will be able to do this so no dates planned at all and financially I don't have the money yet so watch this space :)

Sounds Wonderful ! Can't wait ! I do better in hot weather than I do in cold so the heat won't be an issue for me. Beth, do you think your wonderful husband would be interested in checking out our violins for any needed nips and tucks.... Sort of a violin physical exam ? I'd be interested in something like that. Also wouldn't mind checking out any instruments on your "for sale" list..... AND "shop talk". I would LOVE to learn more about the physical workings of a violin...what to be on the look out for as far as possible issues.....most especially...."How to know a well made violin from a poorly made one". Anything along the lines of learning more about the instrument itself would be very interesting to me. I'm going to go find a large piggy bank for myself now..... :-)

Beth, I like the bit when you say: 'We'l only go outside to get in our cars' :) as I absolutely cannot stand the heat in any way! thank you! :) :) :) Anne, great stuff you would be able to make it, one more to the count!

Hi everyone! I'd be very interested to join the get-together. Mid Feb to mid Apr and mid Jul to mid Oct are generally possible for me, which seems to cover the dates that have been discussed so far.

2012 sounds like a good year for us to get our plans in order. I don't like summers or hot weather, but I can manage it. End of July beginning of August would work for me. I've been to Dallas in the summer and I survived so I know (more or less) what to expect    ;-)

I think that 3-5 days would be a good number of days to spend in Austin and get to know Beth and her awesome city. I'll start a Piggy Bank fund this week.   ;-)

I think that 2 years from now after Beth's guidance we will ALL be a lot more experienced in our playing :) and by then our Meditation should be brilliant!

All I know is, if I can make this trip I'm going to focus on some serious violin learnin. Whatever I can glean from you Beth, I'm going to soak it up like a sponge !

We spent 1 week in Ausitn this year at a B&B spa! I know Beth is a great reason to visit Austin - but keep in mind Austin is the live music capitol of the world! When we visited we heard 2 - 3 bands per day! And then of course there is world famous Texas BBQ!

Guys I am really keen on this event and 2012 sounds really good to me. I love the thought of visiting Austin as I know it would be my kind of place politically. Mary may come although she is not musical at all. She would still enjoy any concerts. As soon as Jo mentioned it on Facebook I thought " A pilgramage to visit our Guru Beth. Yay!!!!

I suppose we can share rooms to save on the tab. It would just be me if I'm able to come, shame to waste an entire room on just one person.

Ok Beth, fair enough, I can see you are a little 'busier' than I am ;) Beth, if you want/don't mind, when you are sure you can 'commit' to this thing, why don't you create an 'event' on facebook from the violin lab.com profile so that you can get an idea of people who will attend? I created one in a hurry but only my friends will be able to see it so it won't reach the violinlab.com community.... ;) pick a date around end of July 2012 :) (Oh dear my son will miss the olympics, but maybe that might convince him to stay in UK so it will be cheaper for me LOL)

hehehehe emg, it's not just to 'twiddle on the fiddle', it's to meet up with your 'virtual friends' :) LOL anyway, we can see in January what we are like, if we have the cash and we know we can have 3 days in Austin then we can go for 2011 :) I'd like 3 days 5 maximum.

Oh Jo, I wasn't moaning ! LOL I just have to convince my husband that it's a worthwhile drain on our finances for me to go down and twiddle on that dang fiddle with a bunch of other fiddle heads ....haha ! Next July......hhmmm...have to think on that. Sooner the better...if I could swing down there on my way to NC in a couple of weeks...I would ! :-D

ps if the majority prefers July 2011, there is a 'slight' chance I might be able to save up in time for that.....so who prefers 2011? or is it too soon for Beth?

jojo

Ok, it looks as if end of July 2012 is a 'probable date' then. Emg, don't you moan coming from Connecticut, I'm coming all the way from UK (other side of the pond!) so if I can make it so can you ;) LOL Kate, I would probably have to book 6 months in advance to get the best deal from Europe then I can get the cheapest flight/hotel/car rental together, unless Beth can find something even cheaper for hotel and car then I'll only book flight in advance, still 6 months in advance is when we get the cheapest deals. So lets try and save up so that we can book in Jan/Feb 2012 for end of July 2012. Hey by the way, I have the Olympics over here in London in 2012, I'll have to miss a week of that to be with you people, but I love violin more LOL so Texas here I come :)

Hi Jo, I live up in the northeast area of the U.S. in Connecticut ...quite a distance from Texas. But really, only an airline away...haha. However....Summer is best for me as well since I also teach in a school and have the summers off. I'd LOVE to get to this event and can start working toward it now. 2012 seems like a reasonable goal. Beth, I saw your vid of the Pachelbel canon and my heart just yearned to play music with others like that. I would so enjoy playing some chamber music with folks from the site here. We could get the music ahead of time so that we can each work on the pieces and be ready to play something together. Sounds like great fun ! It would be a joy to meet you Beth. You've been such a blessing to me in my efforts to get a handle on this instrument. My husband usually likes to take vacation end of June into first week of July, so end of July/beginning of August would be good for me.

I'm near Philadelphia and July and August (not the last week) are the best times for me. Next summer wouldn't be soon enough. No really, whenever it works for everyone else - just kidding. I don't think we would need to book that far in advance would we?

jojo

Ok, sorry Kate missed your post there, so Kate can only do the summer, which month is that Kate? July? August? can you narrow it down for us? and are talking about 2012? where are you based Kate?

jojo

Ok, let's start voting (I hope others want to join too in the 'trip to Austin TX!) My first preference is February 2012, my second is November 2011, we would have to try and book the flights/hotels approx 6 months in advance I reckon.... Emg, do you think you might be able to make it? Docksbloggs?

Kate

Hey - count me in! I would happily come to Austin for 5 days or more for a workshop, lessons, opportunity to play chamber music, whatever. It would have to be during the summer because I teach school and would never get the time off. I'm keeping my fingers crossed something might actually happen. Kate

I get quite sick in the heat/sun so if I am able to be indoors with air-con 100% of the time then maybe I could bare it, if not I'd rather do it winter time (like a november 2011 or february 2012). If the majority dictates the summer and/or it is better to organise things at that time then I'll go along with that but you won't be able to have me anywhere near the sun I have to warn you....
