What is exactly a Masterclass? I thought it was where one person plays a piece and gets a critique while others watched and then the others play and get critiqued as well.  My daughter thought it was like a "section " class where like instruments received specific instruction regarding their particular instrument.  Her "masterclass" in summer camp was where all the clarinets got in a room and received tips and such specifically for their section.  What will the Masterclass at the VLR (Violin lab reunion) be like?

When I grow up, I want to be just like you, Beth.

Sean, a virtuoso represents an infinitely small segment of the population. They are usually  soloists, and make their living wowing audiences with their almost god-like abilities. Itzhak Perlman, Hilary Hahn, Rachel Barton Pine, Joshua Bell, David Garrett, Maxim Vergerov, Gil Shaham to name a few. These are undisputed virtuosi. There are however, virtuosic players, who specialize in perfecting their pyrotechnical skills, like flying up bow staccato, double stops and chords. They love to play the show pieces well, but may not be famous soloists. You can call them virtuosos too if you like. Then there are the professionals or chamber musicians, the group I belong to. We value not the showy, flashy, technical side of playing the violin, but the beautiful melodic side, preferring to play sonatas and chamber music.

My idea of a master class is to that everyone gets a valuable lessons. The "master" addresses the performance of the student, by finding topics and information to share with everyone watching. I think the masterclass should be a little different than a lesson. My plan in a lesson is to help the student learn how to practice and how to approach very specific problems in their playing or pieces. A master class can be like that too, but I think suggestions should be then generalized in a way that the audience can use the information too.

Do you necessarily have to be a 'master' to attend these classes?

oh yeah, and on a somewhat relative subject, what is a virtuoso and how are you considered to have this title?

What your daughter described is called a "sectional". A masterclass is exactly what you thought.
