Thanks Beth, that worked perfectly and everything is now in perfect alignment  *8>)  !  The trick for my Dell PC was "Ctrl-" !  Something so very easy that I never knew and was so very glad I asked!  What exciting times for VL ~~ you've certainly designed an over-the-top amazingly valuable website!  Blessings to you!  Musically yours,  Elizabeth  *8>)

Hi Elizabeth, Sometimes, pages can get enlarged on your browser. The simplest trick is to click command-

That's the command and the minus key. That reduces the page size. I'm not exactly sure how to do it on a PC, but I would guess it's similar. It really should format ok.

You can also sometimes put the mouse cursor at the edge of the window and click and drag it outward to increase the size of your window.

Let me know what you discover form these suggestions.

@Barb. I'll find a darker link color

Dear Beth

Text that include a LINK are not really clearly visible through a distinct colour change as before.

Please please please make a clear colour change for text that includes a LINK

Greetings All!

When reading Community posts I have to continually scroll left to right to be able to read all that's posted!  It seems the website page is too large for my PC.  I've cleared my cache and history, so that doesn't seem to be my problem!  Any suggestions?
Also, is there a Member's listing somewhere, as I just can't seem to locate it?

Musically yours,  Elizabeth  *8>)

Thanks so much Beth for introducing me to this Aria. I just did a sight read run through. Wow, I am emotionally drained. I will post once I review your video lesson for tips & after I clean up a few notes, etc.

Gregory, I just now uploaded files for the Aria. I knew you'd love it!

Susan, the best way to find an individual video is to switch to "View all videos" mode. It's a little blue link above all these main categories.

Then you can do a search. If you type in Guided  all the Guided practices will pop up. You'll see the slur one as well. Then when you click on it, you'll see which video it's associated with. From there you can click "add to favorites" or type in a practice tip for your practice organizer.

Good news is that all the Guided practices have Shoundslices now!

Old to new curriculum mapping
I am transferring my notes and progress to the new site and am wondering if you have a mapping from the old to new curriculum. Such as which level Guided Practice #8 Slurs is located.

Mina, I apologize. I made many changes to the curriculum. I divided things up a little differently as the years passed, I found that my order of skills and lessons needed tweaking. I added more levels as well to give people a better sense of progress and forward momentum.

Dianne, I also noticed that the bowline section under the Resources has disappeared. I guess it will either be integrated into the pieces or will reappear again some time. Until then, here are the direct links to my Dropbox for the Vivaldi and Seitz pieces:

Good pm,

Lesely, if you were using Safari up till now with ViolinLab it might be that you have to clear the cache (as Elke said for the problem I had). That's only if the site looks significantly wrong for you though... if it's something like a minor layout issue, it's probably not that.

I'm not sure how you do that on an iPad since I don't have access to one, but I'm sure the option is there. But you probably want to clear the cache JUST for violinlab.com if possible.

Hi Beth,

I am starting a new piece today, Berceuse, one reason is because you have sooooooo many resources for playing the piece, the harmonics when played with the piano, and it will challenge me with increasing the volume of sound.

But I did find another bug:  The downloads for the Practice Course has not transferred over very well.  :)

I know the new site is a work in progress. I just wondered if anyone else had issues finding the Community pages. I use iPad and could only find the pages by searching google for Violinlab community. I couldn’t find the option from within Violinlab itself.

Yay to those who are liking the new digs!

@Alan, yes, I'm finishing up a Practice Organizer tutorial. To populate that page, you click either the tips provided under the lesson players, or write in your own under the lesson players. Then once there are items clicked (which puts them into the organizer), you can go to the organizer and add the headings.

Hi Beth,

This update looks so good and the timing couldn't be better for me: I could use a shot in the arm....after almost two years of daily practice I can use a bit of extra motivation to help me keep going.

I'm at that stage that happens in everything it seems: that "honeymoon is over" time when a lot of beginners throw in the towel, when the excitement of starting something new has worn off, and when making headway becomes more and more difficult.

I'll keep going because I'm really interested in the violin but I believe the new site improvements will really help me to keep my enthusiasm up.  🎻😊

@Hélène, yes the basic membership will have all the tools including the Soundslices. The only difference between basic and premium is the private video exchange. Most of the repertoire have Soundslices and the ones that don't, I will be working on. My goal is for every piece to have the Soundslices as a practice tool.

@Mariana, the videos will always have the subtitles, but at first there isn't a Spanish translation for the site. However, you can copy and past a url into Google translate, and it will translate the whole page. It's pretty amazing!

Beth, I really like all the new features you'll be offering!  It's obvious that a lot of thought and work went into this new design.  Congratulations!  I have 2 questions.  If we do not subscribe to the one-on-one lessons, is everything else included in the basic package?  And about the Soundslice Play Along videos, will there be a video for all pieces of the repertoire as well as the pieces in the Resources file?   I've been trying to master Musescore which is a similar program to help with my practices but I don't find it very user-friendly so I'm very excited to know that Soundslice would be included in the new Violin Lab!

Timothy Smith
Posted: October 21, 2019
I for one am glad that Suzuki isn't a main focus. I never thought I would say this but I think Suzuki is good for some things. I prefer it as a part of variety in a program as opposed to a central focus. JMOP. YMMV.

Beth Blackerby
Posted: October 21, 2019

Hi James,

Thanks for your questions. As for repertoire, I am not necessarily moving away from Suzuki as much as I am aiming to create a wide variety of options for repertoire. My criticism with Suzuki is multi layered. I don't think the pieces in the books do a good job representing all time periods. Other methods, like ABRSM include pieces written in the Romantic period and the 20th century. So I'm filling in the stylistic holes, you could say.

Also the Suzuki method has too many gaps where the pieces jump too far in difficulty without proper preparation. That's another gap I'm filling. Finally, so many of the Suzuki songs are just not that fun to play and I'm adding repertoire that meets my personal criteria:  Do I enjoy playing this piece? Adults have sophisticated musical tastes, so I'm adding repertoire with richer accompaniment material with appealing harmonies.

As for the "in-progress" question. Yes, you can do a few things. There's not a check box per se, but if there's a piece "in progress" you can do a few things. You can mark it as a "favorite", which would load it onto your favorites page, or you can write a note on the lesson page, which will then dump it into your Practice Organizer page. From the practice organizer, you will see what you wrote, which could even be the title of the piece. It's also a hyperlink back to that lesson. I built in flexibility with the user interface and I'm hoping people utilize it to create a more organized practice system.

James Walley
Posted: October 19, 2019
It looks really promising!  One question, since it seems the progress (visual lesson) page, with the completed lessons grayed out when you marked them as completed, is to replace the method of keeping track of progress on a syllabus spreadsheet, I would point out that the old spreadsheet had different options for the status (watched/practiced/completed, and the like).  Now, obviously, with a video, it's pretty binary; either you've watched it or you haven't.  But, for repertoire, it's a different matter.  Is there going to be an option where you can mark each piece as "in-progress" as well as "completed," so that you can look at your progress page and see which pieces you are currently working on, as well as those you've completed and moved-on from?  I think it would be an important feature.

Also, and I don't want to try to glean too much from screen captures of what would probably be a beta site but, between the list of repertoire items seen in the video plus your incorporation of SoundSlice, is the lesson plan still going to be based on Suzuki, or are you going to be moving away from that?

Sonia, yes it should work on the iPad. It won't be as good as a computer, but it at least should work.

@Timothy, there's nothing you need to do. Your membership will transfer seamlessly. (I shouldn't jinx myself)

@Mary the video exchange option memberships are higher than the basic memberships. $25/month  for monthly lessons or $50/month  for weekly. lessons And those are the previous members rate. Someone signing up for the first time for the private exchange lessons would pay $35/60 .

This is very exciting, Beth!

The amazing video library absolutely deserved and I dare say NEEDED something like this. A great redesign that isn't just style (as is so often the case), but also substance

Moving the structure from the PDFs to the actual website is a great move that will make the whole thing so much more accessible! Also so much easier to parse with the much more visual presentation as opposed to the long list of video titles.

The notes are a brilliant addition! That feature should immensely increase the effectiveness of the lessons.

I also like the idea of accurately keeping track which videos you have watched, want to rewatch, and smoothly work in multiple skill sets: such as intonation and right hand topics during the same practice period.  Not that you can not do that now but with the new format we will be able to keep track of the videos easier.

Also having the watched videos completely or partially shaded will allow us to know at a glance what is the next skill set to work on.

I am so lucky to have found this community. Great instruction & now better organized for all levels.

Also, I wonder if I recommend vlab to my student & she joined, would I be able to track her progress. Some students wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing with all but if they know only teacher has access to their progress they’d be more comfortable. So, a teacher student module would be very cool.
