I too want to be able to improvise one day, ideally in a jazz register. Here's a great video with a ton of ideas as to how to approach it. The technical stuff is over my head (I seem to have zero ability to absorb music theory), but the musical part of my brain gets the idea. Note to self: keep doing scales!

Dianne, do they ever! I too would love, love, love to get to that point. For now tho, I'm happy to even just have "basic" ideas, like a few long bows plus maybe the odd eighth note ;) Something to aspire to at any rate!

See 14:35. Now that's what I would like to be able to do- the double stops and fast runs. Those really spice up the improvisation.

I've seen that video before and it is really good. The problem I see for myself, is that the person is highly trained, so that it looks easier to do those embellishments than it really is for me. I'm still trying to get evenness in the left hand, and would have a while to go to be able to do the things that sound interesting at the end of this video.

No worries, Fabiano -- everyone does that all the time. But nice of you to make the correction ;)

I know just about nil re. harmony or its rules, but I can see how a little knowledge on that front would help immensely. So it's time for me to knuckle down and apply myself. I have this idiotic mental block where some part of my brain resists absorbing it in case it "destroys the magic" -- ridiculous, I know.

PS. In answer to an earlier question of yours, I can read newspaper-level Spanish if I have a dictionary -- but Borges is beyond me!

Leslie,
Accord, accord and accord I heared in the video you linked. That means Harmony and its dry rules. There isn't any other way to improvising.

The "incident" wasn't as bad as it sounds. I think it was an over reaction and a misunderstanding combined. Life goes on :)

(Incident! That got my attention.)

Thx for the link! I am keen to try anything that promises me "effortless" playing. ;)

Hi Lesley,
I am not at liberty to play that vid link right now but I plan to do that. I found this in Fiddlerman. Jazz improvisation

I tend to go to fiddlerman  more since my incident at violinist.com . I still check that out occasionally as a place to look for info too.
