I wonder if any of you are participating in the Play with Ray competition for amateur musicians. The task is to submit a video of the first movement of the Bach Double (Violin 1) and to write a short essay. The prize is a performance in LA with Ray Chen and members of the LA Philharmonic. Here is the announcement: https://playwithray.la/

I have decided to stand by my dream of playing solo with orchestra and to participate. I am doing a series of practice sessions on YouTube at gong play with ray.

Beth has a wonderful tutorial on the second violin part, with many insights that are valid for both parts.

I would be happy about some company in this project. I feel that our voices of adult amateur musicians need to be heard more.

Wonderful performance!! You approached it methodically and it payed off in the final result.  Your sound is absolutely professional, and your expressive choices transformed this piece into something new and fresh. Your practice approaches are invaluable to study.

Thank you for asking how it is going! I am going to answer in another thread, so as not to clutter this one.

Play with Ray submission
Thank you all for your kind words. Dianne, how has it been going for you ?

I have published my final submission on my Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/aMaudPowellFan. You should be able to see it even if you do not have a Facebook account. The YouTube video is available at https://youtu.be/xaYo9oLZKLg. I can't seem to be able to upload the PDF of the essay, though.

I wanted to clarify and say that I think your interpretation matches with Ray's playing, and I think that is important in a duet performance with the LA Phil. You are both making full use of the bow, have lightness in the bow, and are making similar color and phrasing choices. In a Suzuki group class, you can sometimes see variations in approaches, such as bow pressure, bow distribution, variations in dynamic range, etc., but I think you and Ray are very well paired.

Hi Anne,

I can't think of anybody better qualified
for that competition.

Win or not, you will become a better player
for the effort.

Wishing you a great success!

That is what is great @ this piece. You are working on many things, such as expression and dynamics, whereas someone else practices just to be able to play it! I am learning so much...

Bach Double Violin I
Anne, I have started this project today, totally inspired by your videos. I am without a teacher again, and have gotten caught up with playing etudes & exercises only, since the vibrato graduation piece. I just couldn't get into any pieces without some sort of inspiration. However, now I am in the process of catching up with your videos, and I have set my metronome to the slowest possible setting, and worked page one of the Violin I part in Book 5 today, making sure of the fingerings, rhythms, shifts and intonation. What fun to have a live practice partner!

Dear Anne

Day 3 was very interesting as it shows you work on some parts in detail with other ways than the original notes on the music.

You have great patience with yourself.

Well done. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for all the encouragement and practice suggestions. Let me know if anyone intends to join. Of course, it would be super-cool to win. I feel that the main value is in the preparation, and in making our voices as adult amateurs heard. Thank you again!

Best of luck Anne!

You are very focused and you will achieve your goal to play solo.  I will be sure to tune in to your YouTube channel to watch your progress.  How exciting for you.

Dear Anne

That was very interesting watching you work on the piece.

Just one thing I noticed:

My teacher teaches me to repeat a newly worked on part "5" times so that it can better be commited to memory. If you play the "wrong" part as often or "more" than the "right" part it will not stick and you are likely to have to practice it again before getting it "right" straight away.

Love your courage in wanting to submit the piece to "play with Ray".

God bless and happy practicing.
