Hi Beth, in one of your posts to me you said that I should work on pressure and placement. Could you elaborate on that ? Thanks !

Disclaimer: If this is not the place to share things like this, please let me know and I won't do it again! :) But tonight I ran across a website that I thought might be helpful for all of us that are working on better intonation. It's https://www.fretlessfingerguides.com/products.html I also thought that Beth might want to get her wonderful website listed on his "link" page. ~Janice

Hi Everyone! I was practicing bits and pieces of the first violin part of the Smetana String Quartet No.1 today. This video is at the end of my practice session today - I was trying to get a narrower, faster vibrato in the higher register, and I'm not sure about the vibrato on the D and A strings...I feel it's too wide and the tone is too flat-ish. This passage in this video is a bit of a musical release after a more intense section, so I want it to sound warm, enveloping and i want it to have an easy, song like quality...and I don't think my vibrato is getting that through...what do you think? How would I get a faster vibrato in the high register towards the end where it gets more intense? PS - I will get better at making videos! :)

Hi Beth, I noticed that the book that I am using (Essential Strings) starts with using a lot of pizzicato. What are your thoughts about this?

I've been working on the vibrato exercises for a good couple of weeks now. I noticed a little difference here and there over time...but nothing noteworthy.......however, this morning I was amazed at how much stronger my fingers felt. There was a big difference since what I was doing just yesterday. It felt different, sounded much stronger and more vibrant. I don't know how this happens....such a change from one day to the next, but sometimes it does and I'm always amazed. For the first time I'm beginning to actually believe that I'll be able to do this...lol Beth, you're my hero ! :-D

Just a comment on this Sunday's (todays) worship. Our worship leader was away on vacation and came home on Friday. She was very busy after getting home and on sat I was very busy so we didn't get together to practice at all. I got a list of the tunes on Saturday night, but didn't get a chance to go through them until Sunday morning..when I show up early just to play/practice by myself. We all got together an hour before the service and went through each piece once.....Talk about stress ! Lol...but the funny thing was is that I was more relaxed this sunday than all those sunday's when I get more time to work on the music and the rehearsal isn't so last minute. I did a fare job considering all that. The last tune has a beautiful violin solo in the beginning/middle and end of the tune.....well, it's supposed to be beautiful...lol...but usually is a bit shaky and weak because of my nerves..but this morning I think I played that better than I ever have...publicly anyway. What a joy it was ! Can't WAIT to nail that vibrato...maybe by this Christmas' cantata I'll have it ! Thanks Beth !

Hi everyone! I thought I'd just introduce myself because I've just joined this website community. I'm 20 years old, and currently residing in Perth, Western Australia studying law. I've been playing the violin since I was about 14, and try to play as much as I can. I have to say, since I started university, I've had so little time to practice and devote myself to the instrument that my standard and technique have taken a bit of a downturn. I do have some teachers but I can't really find a good one for my needs, and so I came online and found violin lab! Very very helpful, and my technique is slowly returning to me again thanks to this website! Is everyone on this website self taught? I find violin lab very motivational - I come back after uni classes quite tired and all I want to do is sit down with a coffee and watch telly, but I watch a couple of videos from here instead and do some exercises on the violin and have a very self aware, body aware practice session. Thank you so much for the creation of this site!
