The Return of the Ugly Raspy Sound.... And here I thought I'd gotten rid of this problem long ago. Unfortunately, it has crept back. You know how sometimes it sounds as if the bow hair is sliding a bit, and making a raspy/scratchy sound instead of the full sound? Well, that's what has been happening. I have rosined the bow, tried with a different bow, etc. I've also talked to a couple other players and they've commented that my strings are a bit "dug into" the bridge (and not resting peacefully on top of it) and such tight grip might be contributing to the stiffness of the string, which in turn increases the static friction needed to move a string. Whatever... I think it is me, and my simple question to the group and Beth is: (a) why did it come back? Any clues?, and (b) how do I get rid of it? Yes, if I slow down a lot, and/or increase the bow pressure the problem goes away. However, in fast passages and or a lot of string crossings it is difficult for me to increase the pressure. One thing is for sure, it didn't use to happen. Weird... Oh well... |
