I just switched from the hard rectangular rosin to the round cake form. Perhaps it is my imagination but I'm sure the strings sound clear. Perhaps because the round rosin is a little softer and therefore it applies more evenly on the horsehair. In the end it does not matter I know what I'll be buying from now on.

Yeah, I switched from lower grade rosin to a brand that Beth recommended and I'm very happy with it. There's a definite difference in the sound of my violin and....I don't have to rosin every time I pull it out to play.
