How to practice this rhythm?

We play excerpts from West Side Story in orchestra, and it has a long passage of sixteenth notes, in which only the second and fourth are sounded and the first and third are pauses. So it is a fast and long passage of synchopation. The notes are easy, scale-likechanging per quarter note. How do I practice this?

OK, Beth, will try this right now before tonight's rehearsal. The flip to on-beat is exactly the problem. Thank you.

Fast off beats are really hard. Many times, my mind has flipped the "offs" to the "ons" while playing, and then mentally getting back the the "offs" was impossible.  My best trick is to mentally group in fours, not twos. So think a super strong down beat, and play 4 light offs beats, as opposed to thinking a strong beat/off beat ; strong beat/off beat, etc.

This is a great tutorial topic!!  Next week I'll try and shoot an "off beat" tutorial and a slightly off beat tutorial on slurred string crossings. ALright, it's going down on my new industrial size white board!
