Hi everyone :)
Another month another video...
I tried to improve bowing again and I think it got a little bit better, but itīs not easy for me ;)
My tiny camera doesnīt seem to be capable of the loudness, Iīll try out an external mic in the near future (that is the reason why my playing sounds out of tune sometimes hahaha :))
Feel a little bit lost in my practice at the moment, perhaps I should take a look at the beginning videos again and get a better "foundation" in my skills
A few days ago I got my copy of "Superstudies for Viola 1&2" :D

Your comments are highly appreciated and required ;)
Greetings
Andreas

If you guys post videos I can tell you ....you will not regret it one bit.   Beth can give you so much more help with what you're doing if she can actually "see"...what you're doing.  I'm with Beth.....GO FOR IT !   :-)

Go for it Jim!

Hi Andreas - yes I am practicing Minuet 1, but I am afraid to admit it since I probably have no business trying to... I have my first lesson with Beth this weekend so we'll see if she scolds me for attempting something that is too advanced for my meager skills!

Haha Jim xD It feels a bit strange to see yourself playing but itīs good to have this view from "outside".
Thanks Herbert for confirming the meaning of the sign. Isnīt it great to share thoughts with people from all over the world who we probably never would have met without the internet :D
Looking forward for your video Guillome. Did I get it right, you play Minuet 1 after only one month with the violin??
And thanks for the compliment jojo xD

It finally occurs to me that I see Beth every day, but she doesn't see me.  Now that I have seen Andreas do two videos, it occurs to me that i can do this too.  I see how to embed a video, now all I have to do try to make a video.  I think I have all the toys necessary to do this project, so stand by...
I think it will also be educational for me to observe myself.  What a concept!
And then I can even get feedback.
O boy, what am I getting myself into?

The character on his shirt is "man" either in Japanese (which I am) or Chinese. There is nothing offensive about the character. It's just a gender.

Hi Andreas,
Very nice! You inspired me to also record a video of myself attempting Suzuki Minuet 1 to post on here, but in the end I chickened out... Maybe in another month or so... since this is only month number one :)

Good luck,
Guillaume

Not to worry Patricia, and glad the mystery Chinese character has been resolved and the shirt is quite safe for Andreas to wear in public.

Here are a few Chinese proverbs to finish with.

Learning is like the horizon; there is no limit.
First attain skill; creativity comes later.
Only time and effort brings proficiency.
Even the tallest tower started form the ground.
It does not matter if the cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice.

I have to say, I am also quite impressed by this video :)
very good bow arm for a beginner, lovely left hand!
you're onto the right road :) x

Donīt worry Tricia, I have to translate too (german - english), I allways hope that I donīt write something really strange or offensive, otherwise please tell me ;))

Learning Chinese OH no!!! I checked the site that Linda's posted and read the explanations below the pictures. I have more than plenty learning how to play the violin along with the English language. By the way, I just realized that I wrote "coach" (4-wheeled carriage) instead of "couch" (sofa/recliner) in Jojo's thread. But, thanks to the nice people in VL Community, they usually forgive me for all my errors knowing that I have to translate my thoughts to English when I'm writing.

Thanks Linda for looking up the symbol... Iīm glad it doesnīt mean something offensive ;))
Tricia, are you learning chinese or were you looking in the internet, too? I tried to find an explanation for the symbol but didnīt find something... The shirt is really old now so Iīm just wearing it at home this day btw ;)
Robyn, it happens to me too frequently that I think: oh, in tune in tune; and then I play an open string and the whole "in-tune" falls apart. We just have to get a very secure handposition I think, which means another thing to practice ^^

Good Andreas, people have noticed an improvement since your last video.

I interpreted the Chinese characters as: “a man coming home exhausted from working so hard”. However, since the Chinese group laughed when they saw it, I join Eileen by telling you to be careful when wearing the shirt until you know for sure the real meaning.

The Chinese symbol on your shirt could be; man or male or masculine. Have a look at this link and see what you think?

Lol Andreas, I don't think I would wear that shirt again until I found out just what it means......and BTW....I enjoyed your playing very much !  For a starter you sound very confident and I can tell that you've really put some focused energy into what you are playing.   GREAT start Andreas !  :-)

Thanks for your really nice responses, they are very motivating :)
BTW does anybody know what the sign on my shirt does mean?? I run a little shop for souvenirs and one day a group of chinese tourists came in and they pointed at the sign and laughed and smiled.... so I tried to ask them what it means but they didnīt speak english (and of course no german as well ;) ). Very funny situation ^^

Good work Andreas. You're taking it nice and steady and the bowing seems pretty confident. You've done really well so far (I watch Professor V too, a few of Allyson's - though she's a bit serious! Then I found Beth's tutorials and was saved!)

Sounds good!

My gut reaction: Very confident sound. I like that.

Now that I read Beth's comment I notice that point too about bow speed.

Looking forward to next month's installment...

Thank you very much Beth and Kate also :)
Iīm looking forward for the finger motion exercises. Currently Iīm beginning with superstudies book 1. The pieces there are completely different to the pieces in the Suzuki books, which is really great I think.
Playing at the frog is always a struggle for me, things get shaky and out of control up there and the bow is bouncing very often.... so a lot more to practice ^^
And yes Kate Iīm learning on my own so far, beginning with professorV and AllysonsViolinStudio on Youtube. Then I stumbled across violinlab and found exactly what I was looking for :D  (Thank you very much Beth by the way :))

Hey Andreas - I'm impressed. Are you teaching yourself from Beth's videos?

Beth Blackerby

Andreas, I see much improvement!  The wrist is looking more natural and relaxed. Your bow hold and arm and wrist levels look great! In a month or two I would like to see you start finger motion exercises. I may do a class on that at the workshop this summer, so in preparation I'll make some videos.

Also, your bow speed/pressure distribution is good. However on the longer note values, try for an immediate slow down in bow speed after you change the bow to the long notes (particularly when the long note is an up bow). That way you'll be have the liberty of more bow to use at the frog, and won't have to slow the bow in that area.

Thank you for posting!
