hi everyone

I post a new video of the Accolay, this time on the violin.

I apologize for my grimaces, hesitancies and mistakes
but this piece is a real challenge for me,
particularly the many shifts in the same phrase, the string crossings,
the minor third in the double stop passage and the harmonics.

I wasnít brave enough for the spiccato section so I played it detache.
any comment is welcome. Hope you like it

I have no point of context here because I haven't listened to Accolay. It seems for two years though you are doing very well. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Valerie,
Re playing from score and listening to the music. I did an experiment a little while ago, I sightread a piece and then for the next month I only used the score and listened to a recording, no violin. Then I replayed the piece and it was as though Iíd practised it for the month, I would say itís about 80% as good as playing, but I actually knew where I was wrong a lot quicker too.

It takes quite some concentration to play a 4 minute piece. And you have vibrato at playing only 2 years and shifting too.

I agree with the others that intonia.com would be a great help. I need to use it too. It is an excellent program.

Thank you for having postet it on the violin too. I do not play the viola as I think it would confuse me with the fingering. You will have different finger placements on those instruments. How do you cope with that?

Donít worry, this piece goes only up to fifth-sixth position: the highest stopped note is G (I play it with an extended 4th finger in fifth position). The really high E you saw on the last page of the score is a harmonic! I couldnít play higher than fifth position :)

Hello Valerio,

Great choice piece and great start, you will definitely learn a lot from this piece...

I looked at the manuscript at IMLSP site and looking at the tall lines like antennas [on rooftops] I panicked and closed the tab immediately. I can only read antenna lines from E to G the highest I could go perhaps up to 5 antenna lines which is B...The rest I need to study further...

Hi Sonia! I definitely need to improve  my intonation, so any aid is welcome.
I donít have the habit of following along the score while listening to good performances of pieces Iím working on.. Iíll have a try! Didnít know it could have been helpful.
I will  also try and work separately on the different techniques. Thanks for the input!

The Accolay concerto is not easy (itís set for grade 7 of the Australian violin exam). 

It is almost a set of studies or phrases addressing more advanced techniques such as string crossings, double stops, position changes, spiccato etc. Perhaps take and work on those sections in isolation?

Do you also listen to quality performances of this piece? This is a great thing to do, with your music in front of you. Watch the notes and hearing what they should be cements them into your brain, so that when you come to play it, you will know if you hit the wrong note.

Thanks for the advice. I havenít got confortable in fifth position yet; Iíve completed the etudes of the whistler book in fifth position a month ago or two and working on the shifting section at the end of the book these days (thatís also a reason why I picked the Accolay).
Long story short I havent played the three octaves GM scale enough times.
Iíll follow the advice and try to drill it in the next days working with Intonia (just downloaded!). Thank you also for tour kind comments!

A couple of years ago I can remember trying to play Boy Paganini with Maria in a thread and it was a disaster. It was repertoire suggested for 2 or 3 books ahead of me. Everything for me has to be incrementally planned and moving slowly apparently. :) You are able to play this piece so well, shifting seamlessly, and yes doing all the difficult coordination in this piece. For instance, I am still working on putting 4 notes to a bow in a 3 octave GM scale, and segmenting the fingerings in the 3rd octave is difficult for me because its new to me. But it is so worth it if you are at the level where you can handle this. I use my tuner and Intonia daily to keep in tune because it's the first thing to go on me. Good luck, and your violin does sound nice!

Hi Valerio,

The Accolay is a tricky piece, and in many regards you are doing well. But because there are so many things to think about when playing it, that means the brain doesn't have much room to also listen to intonation. My main suggestion is to spend about 20 minutes a day with Intonia or an app that creates a drone (TE tuner) and start playing extremely slowly so that you can match each and every interval. In the Practice Course there are videos on Fine Tuning #57-60. I feel this would be very helpful for you. You are clearly very coordinated and training your arms to do advanced techniques comes easy for you. Relatively speaking of course. In other words I can tell you have excellent motor skills. The real challenge is training the brain. It can be done but it requires ultra focus. Just take one measure at a time and play until you have it perfectly in tune. Using Intonia in the say that I mention is a great way to check your own accuracy.So glad to hear your progress.
