Finally done!! The Practice Course is ready!!

You'll have to clear your cache to see the new Practice Course tab in it's new position on the menu bar. Currently you'll see it under the home button, but obscured in the header. So sorry that you have to clear your cache, but such is the tech way of life.

As we just launched, there might be a bug or two. Hopefully not! I tested by making fake new accounts and all was working properly.

I think you will learn so much from working through the course. If you sign up, a bonus treat will arrive in your inbox.

The price will go up in a few months, so if you want the discount buy it now. Even if you're not ready to watch the videos, you have your life to do it.

Subtitlers, you should have access to the Practice videos. I thank all of you for you quick help!

Spanish subtitles coming soon!

Nicolinette, the Note Reading Course is similar to the Practice Course: It is not part of the normal membership. You need to purchase it to get access to it.

In fact, is it that Note Reading is free as a member or by the purchase of a practice course? English not being my language , is  this me who has badly translated ?

Practice Course Binder
I was so inspired by your notebook, Assumpció, that I made one for myself. :) I watched the intro video, then watched the first practice course video and took notes. My notes are my understanding of the material presented. I then printed my notes and put them in the binder. I read my notes over a couple of times, so by the time I have watched the video, listened to the video, and read my notes, I have absorbed so well what was presented. And I have notes for later to go back to. I am so inspired by this process! (Not to mention the pink binder speaks to me to get to work and have fun!)

Nicolinette, Try changing browsers- I got the exact same screen.

Hello everyone!

An idea for the practice course!

I'm doing the practice course from the beginning. Although my level is a little more advanced than the first pieces, I think it's better to do everything in order. It's worth doing little by little and studying each video well, patiently and not wanting to move too fast ... because later the progress is much greater.

I have prepared a "book" with plastic bags where I put the pieces and notes that I take from each video.
It is a very effective way to work and also allows you to take the book somewhere and study with it ...
It's an idea; ;-)

Hello everyone

Yes, it happens to me the same ... on my computer the video number 34 can not be seen.

Barbara Habel

Got the same problem as Dennis. No 34 does not work due to privacy settings.

@ Dennis. I never thought of trying them all out for playability. Thank you for having done that. I am sure Beth can fix it quickly.

But it will take me a while before I get to watch no 34.

Thanks for this course! :) I purchased it and will work through it when I'm ready for it. I tryed to start every video but one Video doesn't work. "Nr.34: Add a Note" It says: We are sorry. Based on the following privacy settings, this video can not be played here.

Does someone has the same problem?

Beth. having already had to "remake" my technique on the piano, I know the importance that the violin a conscientious practice is important, what you elsewhere offer here violinlab.I do not seek so mechanical virtuosity but rather to succeed in better to  sing this cherished violin who slept long years in a wardrobe. As for the repertory or I will put your learning process, I like the gavotte of Lully, because of its small side espiegle:) The chacone of Durand tells me a beautiful story, a day can be! Here, what I found on Youtube

https://youtu.be/KwQ0YCHpPzw

Ray, thank you I will look for musescore. For Scottish: Free-scores.com: Beethoven, Ludwig van - Scottish (Violin and Piano)

Eccosaise was the only one I was not able to find so I put into musescore so that I could hear what it will sound like. Once there I will be able to record it onto Garage band to help with timing.

Beth Blackerby

Nicolinette, many of the pieces will be on Youtube. The Eccosaise is probably the only one you won't be able to find. Which piece are you looking to work on?

Ray

Hi Nicolinette,

What Beth has recommended, before (I believe in a video somewhere), is to have a look at iTunes or somewhere similar for a few recordings that speak to you.  Beth recommended a recording instead of YouTube.  I have done this with the two pieces I am learning and it certainly helps in the learning process.

Hello Dianne!
Thank you very much for your reply!
It is very useful for me!
I will try to translate the videos with everything you have explained to me and in this way start working on them.
I want to study all the videos in an orderly manner and I think this course will be a fantastic tool to learn more.
We should all have it!

Again, thank you very much
Greetings from Barcelona!

Following the purchase , I wondered if the pieces of the practice could be listened to and seen somewhere, in fact there is a link that I would not have seen ?

Transcribing Videos to Spanish
Hello Assumpció, if you clear your browser cache, clear the history of your Chrome or Edge etc., the Practice Course should appear at the top of your computer screen. If it is appearing there, but when you purchase you still cannot access the Practice Course videos, that happened to me as well, and I had to change to a different browser (Edge) to access the videos, then my original browser worked as well from then on. If you try the clearing and the changing of browsers, it just may work for you.

As far as transcribing the videos, it is a bit time consuming, but it can be done. One way is to use your computer and Google Docs (open up a new Google Document and select tools/voice typing, click the microphone/click record and hit play on the Practice Course video, and let Google Docs transcribe everything that's said in the video). Or even better use your phone (Android or Iphone, and open up a Word Processing or note taking APP (I use OneNote for Android which is free), and on your keyboard when you go to do text input, select the microphone button on the screen with the keyboard keys (not the audio microphone higher up), which selects voice input, and hit play on your Practice Course video). This will give you a pretty good English text that you can then translate to Spanish. Long process, but might be helpful. Here is the video I got it from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWNCPj5jTWM&feature=youtu.be

Now, when I just tested this on my Android using the video above, it worked perfectly, but only if I went into the OneNote settings, and along with the default English, I selected Languages- English (Australia)!

Hello everyone,
Can someone explain how to register for the practice course?
What is the price and how do I buy it?

I've tried from the computer and I can not ... but from the mobile, I can see the videos
... can be?
I would like to have the subtitles in Spanish but I can not wait and I want to buy it now to start working although I understand little English.
Thank you very much!

Hi Mary
If you look in resources, syllabi for Violin lab, there is a rubric for advancement which gives a description of the skills at each level. That should help, I think.

Feedback on Video 2 Planning and Mapping: Half Notes

Hi Beth,  well done you.  What I've notice so far s that during the first half of the assignment, it was very easy to notice the repeats and partial phrases used trough the pieces.

For the second half, when we use intonia, the differences in how close you need to be for the half steps, immediately became evident.  And the work from o e piece carried over to the next.

Looking forward to video 3.

@Barb, it means you need to clear your browsing history. Usually, you can find that by clicking where it says Firefox, or Chrome. See if you can locate something that says "clear history".

@Michael, I'm sorry that I didn't make that clear. I meant that if you were using your own music and not one of the pieces I provided that making copies would keep your originals clean. Only with your own music you'd need to add boings and fingerings. But since you're using one of the pieces in the packet, you're right, I already have most everything done for you.

And yes the circled numbers mean shifts. The 3 to 3 shift in measure 3 is for expressive purposes. As it's a Romantic piece, little one finger slides like that are quite nice.

Thanks for the feedback.

what does "have to clear your cache" to see the new class mean? I don't see it after logging off and back on and starting and restarting computer

Dianne
Posted: June 5, 2018
Michael, that is a playful piece and those shifts are probably for character or even convenience with the 4th finger vibrato. Good  question about the unmarked sheet music... some of it may be right  here on Violinlab but not The Swan.

"Purchased"

My intention is to be diligent to go through this course over the summer...rather to "start" moving through it.  One of my weaknesses in learning this instrument has been purposeful, properly thought out practice.  I've gotten better at doing this over the years, but still not where I should be really.   I know that if I prove diligent in this...I will certainly benefit a great deal Beth.  Thank you for all your hard work !

They gave me the 2nd principal position in our orchestra...and frankly I'm rather undeserving because if the 1st doesn't show up for some reason....there's no way I could play her solos !  I told them that and I guess I'm their best bet at present...lol.....so....I better get on it before my worst nightmare actually happens !     {:-o

Assumpció, as far as I understand you can sign up right now. The videos will just be updated at some point so they also contain the Spanish subtitles. But once that happens everyone will access the videos with all the subtitles in it. You do not "sign up" especially for videos only with Spanish subtitles. - So no need for you to wait several more months...

At least this is my understanding - please correct me, Beth, if this is incorrect.

Questions
This course looks very interesting.  I'm looking forward to going through this.  I did not participate in the development phase, so I apologize if I'm being dense but I have a couple of questions after the watching the 1st 2 videos.

1).  In the first lesson, you mention keeping a clean page and creating LH and RH copies.  But the pdf download already has bowings and finger numbers written in...  Is there a clean copy somewhere else or did you just save us from having to do that homework?

2).  As far as the fingering conventions being used (I happen to be looking at The Swan right now), I assume the circled fingerings are indicating a shift.  But some of the shifts I'm not sure I'm interpreting correctly - for example in the third measure, I'm in 3rd position for the A (2nd finger) and B (3rd finger), then a circled 3 for C would seem to indicate a shift from the B to C with the 3rd finger- is there a reason for a shift there rather than just a 4th finger?  I think this pattern exists in several places where I wouldn't normally think to shift.

I'm only through 2 videos, so maybe some of this clarifies later but can anyone provide any insight on this?  Thanks!

Thank you Beth for your welcome effort.

I am playing 11 years now and over the years I have picked up some practicing technique. But nothing as comprehensive like what you showed us in the test version of the practice course.

I am definitely ready to learn how to learn.

Thank you also for the subtitles. I find it always very useful when programmes or films do have them.

Thank you.
