Hi Everyone,

I have started a new (for me) piece of music.  Deck The Halls.  This version is found in the resources section along with many other Christmas carols.  Beth has the PDF, tutorial, and audio in the resources as well.

This is a good piece for me because it will give me a lot of practice of a few techniques that I learnt in Moon Over Ruined Castle:  dotted quarter, low 2nd finger, and of course rhythm.  It will also challenge me because while the first time through the tempo is slow it certainly speeds up on the repeat.  It also changes key signatures:  G Major to D Major then back to G Major.  And lets not forget about that 4th finger and being able to play beautifully on the E string.

So yesturday was the first day and I am using Beth's video http://violinlab.com/videoLibrary/lesson.php?id=629
Stages in Learning a New Piece of Music.

I am posting my first video, and like Beth has suggested, I have not reviewed my video yet.  That is for Day 02 or today.  I have started with right hand only and have also started with the first four measures.  Actually this is a great piece of music because there is a retake every four measures.  I have made lots of fine scribbles on the score sheet Beth and of course many more to come.  :)))

The first video is mostly talking but at around 3:40 or so I make my first attempts at right hand only those first four measures.  I have them on a loop.

So that I do not over run the community page, besides the first video, I will post regular updates on YouTube.  Another goal, for me, is to be more efficient in learning a piece of music and perhaps along the way learn something about myself.  :)))  So if you are curious and would like to follow me on YouTube, Day 01 of Learning Deck The Halls.   Oh AND PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS  along the way!!!  :)))

May The Beat Be With You,

Ray

definitely your rhythm is amazing, I am working on that and noting how important and how rhythm helps with sound

Hi Ray, I had a chance to watch all your videos on this project so far. I was so impressed with your writing of the string names above the notes so that you could practice just bow arm. If I were to do that in all the scratchy place I hear in my playing, I could isolate and make tons of progress in a very short amount of time. Your rhythm training got better each day on the 8th notes, and your entrances after the retakes were stellar. The metronome at the beginning on the 4th day kind of sounded like a hammer! Was that on the recording? Will continue to follow this interesting project!
