Bow Tilt - Do I Need It?

Dear Beth & All,

I am in the very, very early stages of learning on Violin Lab and I am currently at the long bow stroke stage, helped immensely by your excellent videos Beth.

I may have missed this somewhere but should the hair always be flat on the string for a beginner, and by implication is tilting the bow towards the finger board an advanced technique?

Regards

Nick

PS: The Itzhak bow grip video was very helpful, thank you.

PPS: I have been using a 10 / $15 webcam to great effect with my practice; if anybody is interested I will post some details.

I have an inbuild camera in my laptop, then I have this camcorder for when I feel really brave, but those days are far and few in between now LOL ;)

Monica,

The camera is a Kinobo USB Origami Webcam 5mpx and is on Amazon.com for $13.99 at the moment. It is quite tiny, about the same size as a credit card and about an inch deep, and very versatile.

You will need software to drive it and I downloaded Philips V Lounge software for free from http://www.p4c.philips.com. You need to find the product section for a Philips SPC900NC webcam and then download the drivers for your operating system. I am running it on Windows 7 at the moment and used it previously on XP.

The V Lounge software is quite easy to use and I set the webcam up to record my early attempts at learning the violin. I get instant feedback about bow angle etc. and I find that I can watch Beth's excellent videos, have a go myself and then compare my efforts against hers.

The sound quality is not brilliant but then my sound quality is not brilliant either! I don't think that the overall video quality is good enough for uploading to this site and I would probably use my compact camera for that. The other problem is that the sound sometimes gets out of sync with the picture, but at the moment I am only really interested in watching myself at the moment.

A great little tool that has helped me enormously.

Hope this helps,

Best wishes,

Nick

Hi Nick,

I'm interested in how you use your web cam to help your practice and what kind of web cam etc.

I was about to ask the same thing.

Great video, as always, Beth.  It answered my question on why I have the same "strong" notes even when I move near or far from the bridge.

Hi Nick,

I think having the proper tilt is a part of good basic tone production, so no, tilting the bow is not an advanced technique. It should happen anyway as you are mastering the basics of the whole bow stroke. There is a video called "Bow Tilt".  If you search tagword: bow tilt, and scroll half way down the search results, you'll find it.
