Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to interduce myself, I'm Katherine, and very new here. I've always wanted to learn to play the violin and after my husband gifted me one for our anniversary I tried learning on my own but haven't really gotten anywhere, so I am really looking forward to getting started here and getting to know the community!!

Welcome Katherine!

Even if you are on your own you can get quite far I believe (I am on my own as well in learning the violin... 1 year and 4 months to be precise :) ). But you need to be focused and find a correct learning path/process. Even deciding which songs and pieces to learn is very important. And without a teacher that guides you, this is where you might get lost or discouraged more easily.

I can say that violinlab is really one of the best resources and community you will ever find online (and I have watched a LOT of videos on YouTube!), so if you follow the video lessons structure for example, that alone is enough to keep you on track. And possibly do some videos (even at low quality) of you playing... you can then get some precious feedback on the way you actually play and learn from your mistakes. That I think is essential for your progress.

Enjoy playing the violin!

Hello from SoCal (Southern California)
Hi.  So glad you found Beth's amazing site. You will enjoy the video's and be sure you visit the RESOURCES for additional information that has links, PDF's to download and then post a video of your progress so Beth and others can help you if you don't have a teacher right away.  I would encourage you to find a local violin teacher who can help you so you don't fall in bad habits with the bow arm or fingering the notes.  So glad your husband found you a violin…if your having any problems with it take it to a local violin shop, not a music store…a violin shop will have trained luthiers who know about violins.  Good luck and let us know how your doing.  Welcome to the violin journey.
Stay tuned. Diane in SoCal

Hi Katherine, welcome!  This site is super awesome, you are so blessed to have found it at the beginning of your violin journey.  I spent a year learning bad habits before landing here but now I've started back at Beth's Level videos and have learned SO MUCH.  Look forward to seeing your posts and interacting!

Katherine, just a note, since you are new: Have you discovered that Beth has put together a syllabus? You find it in the Resources section and it will guide you through the appropriate videos in the right order.

You have a very thoughtful husband! I'm glad you found us. If you go through the videos and work with the concepts slowly, and commit to being patient, you'll go far!
