| This discussion includes members-only video content Hello everybody! I am working on a piece where I need to play grace-notes and mordent (I am attaching the notes). I have no idea how to play mordent, so the end of the piece is a little mess. :) But I tried to do grace notes. Often they come when I don’t need them but this time I am trying to play them consciously. :) Don’t know yet if I’m doing it right though. I play a short previous note after I change the direction of the bow. In this piece there are two grace notes together in two places. I skipped them, I don’t know how to play it. My other exercise is on glissando, trying to learn when to change the bow direction and how to play slurs with glissando (and also when to change the bow direction here). This discussion includes members-only video content I thought I’d post another video. I don’t have any questions about this one, this is just a piece from my homework for the next lesson which will be tomorrow. I enjoy playing it, it’s rather simple but I like it. It would sound better with vibrato but my arm is not ready for that yet. I’m playing with a mute, it's late at night. Mute helps to extend learning hours but I cannot see much where the bow travels on the string, so you can hear that I touch other strings sometimes. Will get rid of that one day. :) |

Hi Beth, no problem! I’m happy to hear that you recorded for the movie, it’s great! I even feel a little proud as if I had something to do with it too. :) I keep working on that piece and considered the advices I got here. Before you post I will make another attempt to play it, hopefully with some improvements in grace notes and mordent. I also noticed that in one place I played C natural instead of C sharp. |

Elke, Dianne, Mary and Nick, thank you or watching my video and for your comments! Elke, here is a bigger picture of double grace notes: Nick, I also didn’t pay attention whether I rotated the elbow, will try to remember next time I play. Too many things to watch and my teacher asks to play with a metronome, in my brain there is not more space for it! I am still working on my right hand (not even mentioning the left hand :) ). When I change the bow direction the sound is often not clear. I think it’s either because I slow down the hand when I change direction or because my hand drops on the string instead of reaching it smoothly, or maybe something else, I haven’t figured out yet. It especially gets worse when I play long slow notes, I don’t like them. :) Beth I look forward to your video. I will try to replay that piece correctly. |

Valeria, your grace notes sounded just fine to me. The two that you left out are played just like the others: as very quick little notes leading to the "real" note. The only problem there (and that is what is different from the other examples) is that you have to involve another finger. I can't really see whether the first of the two little grace notes is an E or an F#. If it is an E, then you play the open E, then I would place both first and second finger, play the G and lift second finger right away. However, this is an easy exercise, so I kind of suspect that the first of the two little grace notes is an F#, then a G, then the "real" note F#. In this case it actually is the notes you would play also for a mordent. This kind of mordent starts on the note, very quickly goes to the next higher note and back to the first note (see here for an explanation). The big difference is that in the grace note, you need to be done with the ornament when you get to the third beat in the measure, whereas the mordent you actually start with the ornament on the third beat. |
