Not wanting to create neighbor problems I recently purchased a Glaesel practice mute. To my ear I actually prefer the muted sound. I have only been playing for 4 weeks so do not think of me as Heifetz. Could this be a sign that better strings might be in order? Or perhaps just a better player. Thanks Dilwyn

Hi Beth, I've been getting pain in my left elbow. I believe it's from reaching around on the higher positions at the G string. Twisting that arm around is a bit difficult, though I don't seem to notice much discomfort while I'm playing (except for the awkwardness of it)....it's pretty much sore all the time other than that. Any suggestions as to how I should deal with that ? Thanks !

Beth, Is it best not to look at your hands while playing the violin? Is looking straight ahead best? Dyan

Hi Beth and ViolinLab community. Beth, I just wanted to say again how much I appreciate this site. I took up the violin about six months ago. I keep plugging away, practice most days and have used the guided practices a lot. I have to say there is some progress, but I do get discouraged that it's not happening more quickly. Kimber, your video was so very impressive for just a few months of study. How'd you do that? My teacher has put me in a string ensemble with other students. We'll have a recital in the Spring. My part is pretty basic, but I'm looking forward to our rehearsals, and playing with the big kids. And to Diane, thanks for the tips on purchasing a violin and bow. The videos were very helpful. I haven't purchased yet, but have started the process. Of course my teacher is helping me too. Oh and Beth, if you remember my dilemma with the glasses and progressive lenses. My optician made me a pair of "music glasses". And that's working out mch better. Patricia

I finally made a start with double stops and octaves with my teacher last saturday and we started learning the Wieniawski Legende Op17, I love this piece, wonderful, but so tricky to learn at first, a lot of getting used to, not easy at all, lots of 'gymnastics' has to be done daily for my left hand/fingers to get used to it!!! and it sounds so simple!! who would have thought it??? LOL
