Hi Beth, is Mercy again.

  • I am getting frustrated with staccato motion. I have been practicing "Allegro"from the Susuki Book 1, and I think that with your tutorial was enough to get it. But I am having problems with "Perpetual Motion". I think that my staccato is too weak, I already saw the explanation you gave for that piece as well as the videos lessons: staccato up bow stroke, staccato vs spiccato etc, but I still don't get it. I was wondering if there are aditional exercises for staccato on your page. like those ones you have for "bow articulation, playing in the tip or in the frog exercises".. those videos helped me a lot when I was learning to hold the bow, to articulate the bow adding presure and more. i think that i will send you a video so you can see what my mistakes are.

Please explain step by step, because Iím not very good with videos copy and/or handling matters.

Thank you

Ok - Eileen (and others) you asked for it.  Here I am playing "Simple Gifts".  Please understand I've only been playing for 7 weeks so don't tear me apart too much! :-)

I know I need to work on my intonation and what is up with me "swaying" so much when I play?!  I didn't realize I did that.  Weird. lol

My instructor still thinks my violin needs a sound post adjustment - she thinks it sounds really "nasally".  I guess it does?? I still think she doesn't like my violin. lol

Eileen
In this video towards the end you mention about having to adjust the placement of the first finger on E depending on what you're playing. I usually have a difficult time finding that note because it never seems to be in the same place. I can tell when I'm off with just about every other note (most of the time) but that one frustrates me...I just can't seem to hear it right. I always thought it had something to do with my hearing issues, and maybe it does because I also have more difficulty tuning the E to A string for some reason. I can hear the pitches come together with G,D...D,A but I'm always second guessing myself with A,E and usually grab my electronic tuner to double check. Is this just an issue with me that I need to find a "fix" for, or could it have something to do with what you were talking about concerning the "just" intonation ? Great videos BTW ! ;-)

This question is for Beth and any of the other violin teachers on here:  What makes a "good" student?  What makes  an "exceptional" student?     On the flip side, what makes a student hard to teach or a "bad" student?    Thanks!

Hi Beth and everyone.

So, I'm practicing my violin and I'm now mastering Song of the Wind.  With my current skill level, is it good to be adventurous and play a song on the by ear?  So far I'm at the second stanza of a song and it has notes outside the 1st position (such as A flat on D string and and C on the A string).  I know the notes because I'm using my piano to help me identify what I should play on my violin.....

Is this bad for my violin skills as I don't know how much bow to use and where in the bow I should play?
