Ok - Eileen (and others) you asked for it.  Here I am playing "Simple Gifts".  Please understand I've only been playing for 7 weeks so don't tear me apart too much! :-)

I know I need to work on my intonation and what is up with me "swaying" so much when I play?!  I didn't realize I did that.  Weird. lol

My instructor still thinks my violin needs a sound post adjustment - she thinks it sounds really "nasally".  I guess it does?? I still think she doesn't like my violin. lol

In this video towards the end you mention about having to adjust the placement of the first finger on E depending on what you're playing. I usually have a difficult time finding that note because it never seems to be in the same place. I can tell when I'm off with just about every other note (most of the time) but that one frustrates me...I just can't seem to hear it right. I always thought it had something to do with my hearing issues, and maybe it does because I also have more difficulty tuning the E to A string for some reason. I can hear the pitches come together with G,D...D,A but I'm always second guessing myself with A,E and usually grab my electronic tuner to double check. Is this just an issue with me that I need to find a "fix" for, or could it have something to do with what you were talking about concerning the "just" intonation ? Great videos BTW ! ;-)

This question is for Beth and any of the other violin teachers on here:  What makes a "good" student?  What makes  an "exceptional" student?     On the flip side, what makes a student hard to teach or a "bad" student?    Thanks!

Hi Beth and everyone.

So, I'm practicing my violin and I'm now mastering Song of the Wind.  With my current skill level, is it good to be adventurous and play a song on the by ear?  So far I'm at the second stanza of a song and it has notes outside the 1st position (such as A flat on D string and and C on the A string).  I know the notes because I'm using my piano to help me identify what I should play on my violin.....

Is this bad for my violin skills as I don't know how much bow to use and where in the bow I should play?

I'm a bit confused with this video. I thought positions were independent of scales, like if I go to 3rd position my 1st finger will land on where the 3rd finger was in '23' pattern regardless of scale, unless I choose to go 'low 1' and lower it to reach down. Otherwise I would use 2nd finger. But if I got it correctly here it is suggested that to play Amaj in 3rd position I need to start with 1st finger on C#, not the 2nd! So the travelled distance from 1st to 3rd position becomes dependent on scale? Is that correct?

YEAH!!! My "baby" is back!! :-)  Took a 4 hour round trip drive to pick him up but it was SO worth it. The luthier I found is WONDERFUL.  She was so nice and really did an amazing job on the old guy.  She also sent me home with a D. Carvalho bow to try (shhhh, don't tell the hubby!! lol).

I played my violin for about an hour after getting home (with the new bow..lol) and it sounds SO GOOD!  I know everyone has said it will need a settling in period so it makes me happy it sounds as great as it does already.

If anyone needs a wonderful luthier on the east coast be sure to contact Sonja St. John!  She's awesome! Ok, enough from me for now.  :-)

Hi, everybody... I'm a little confused about the issue on notesXpitchesXskiping. In Lesson 38, Beth is playing (A - C /retake/A - D...) -or- (A - C# /retake/A - D...) ? /// excuse my english... I'm not a native speaker ;)

Hello,

Yesterday I was just playing as usual I do, sudderly the E string was broken !!
My strings are Obligato and I just bought them 4 months ago, and I play around 1 hour every day, so I would like to know that if this is normal o not.

The second thing is, today I went to buy it (E String), I came home and I tried to put it in the violin I was already trying to tune the string I think I was around D5#, I tied a little more......
and IT WAS BROKEN again !!! so I obviously imagine that a I tied to much even that a felt that I just did a little, I feel so frustated it was not so cheap the string.

Thank you.

If the ring tone must sound the same as the open string, then why can't we just learn just one ?
