Happy new year to fellow Violin Lab friends!  Yes, it's been that long since I last posted as I've been relocating 300 miles north due to work.  As well as a new job and finding a new house, I now need to find a new teacher!  Here in West Yorkshire there seem to be two groups of teachers: those who earn a living by teaching and do amateur or semi-pro playing on the side, and those who play regularly in professional orchestras (there are at least 4 in the near area!) and do teaching on the side.  Although I realise a lot depends on the individual teacher, I'd be interested in hearing who you think, in general, would give the 'best' musical training and have all the tips and tricks?

Thanks!

Aaargh!!!!   Turns out Viddler, the site that hosts my videos is undergoing a major interface/website change. The window I get when I try to log says it's "Down for Maintenance".  I hope it will be resolved very soon.. I will be trying like crazy to get someone on the phone.

I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. I'm sure it will be fixed soon. They really are a great company.

My parents bought me the Basics by Simon Fischer book on violin technique for my birthday and, wow, there is a lot more to playing the violin than I ever thought!!  It is a great resource...I recommend it! :-)

Is there any extraneous reason why I should get a squeak bowing C sharp on the A string? Am I pressing the string down too hard? I am having trouble keeping from gripping the neck. Do I need to bear down more on the string with the bow? This is very annoying.

Hi Beth, Just tried to order "A Rhythm A Week-Violin" by Alfred through your website. It is currently unavailable and they don't know if and when they will have more in stock. However, "Rhythm A Week for Strings: Rhythm Units in Unison Using Major and Minor Scales" by Anne C. Witt is available. Will Anne Witt's book match the audio sounds that you have loaded into the Rhythm A Week video? Thanks.

Hi Beth,

I checked out the practice rhythms for the rhythm a week project and some of them are not working...at least on my computer.

BTW....this is "great" and just what I need.  I did purchase the book and have been looking through it the last couple of days.  It didn't look too terribly difficult until I tried playing through some of those rhythms around the middle of the book...haha.  This is going to be very helpful...and fun besides !  Thanks !  :-)

Has anyone tried Perfection Pegs?
They are a geared tuning peg that replaces a normal tension peg without damaging the pegbox or peg hole (you can replace them with your existing pegs if you want afterwards.)

Being used to playing guitars/banjos I find the tensions pegs very annoying, both to tune and the way they occasionally slip. I'm thinking of changing them over (my husband is keen on a set for his cello as well) and wondered if anyone had any experience.

A slight mishap but atleast I have a spare bow.  As I had just finished practicing I sat down to eat.  Quite literally a meatball rolled off the table and headed for the door to travel down my stairs to my apartment.  And it would have except my $800 Prell bow stoped the meatball in its tracks.  The bow saved the meatball from a worse fate but at the sacrifice of the hair.  Looks like it needs to be rehaired.  I'm telling this cautionary tale to all who will bend bend their ears to my woes.  :)))
