Just a comment on this Sunday's (todays) worship. Our worship leader was away on vacation and came home on Friday. She was very busy after getting home and on sat I was very busy so we didn't get together to practice at all. I got a list of the tunes on Saturday night, but didn't get a chance to go through them until Sunday morning..when I show up early just to play/practice by myself. We all got together an hour before the service and went through each piece once.....Talk about stress ! Lol...but the funny thing was is that I was more relaxed this sunday than all those sunday's when I get more time to work on the music and the rehearsal isn't so last minute. I did a fare job considering all that. The last tune has a beautiful violin solo in the beginning/middle and end of the tune.....well, it's supposed to be beautiful...lol...but usually is a bit shaky and weak because of my nerves..but this morning I think I played that better than I ever have...publicly anyway. What a joy it was ! Can't WAIT to nail that vibrato...maybe by this Christmas' cantata I'll have it ! Thanks Beth !

Hi everyone! I thought I'd just introduce myself because I've just joined this website community. I'm 20 years old, and currently residing in Perth, Western Australia studying law. I've been playing the violin since I was about 14, and try to play as much as I can. I have to say, since I started university, I've had so little time to practice and devote myself to the instrument that my standard and technique have taken a bit of a downturn. I do have some teachers but I can't really find a good one for my needs, and so I came online and found violin lab! Very very helpful, and my technique is slowly returning to me again thanks to this website! Is everyone on this website self taught? I find violin lab very motivational - I come back after uni classes quite tired and all I want to do is sit down with a coffee and watch telly, but I watch a couple of videos from here instead and do some exercises on the violin and have a very self aware, body aware practice session. Thank you so much for the creation of this site!

I thought I would post a vid of some progress I've been making on that duet piece I've been working on. It's coming along nicely I think, with a need to polish the more difficult sections...that beginning measure...the 5, 6 runs, areas like measures 72-80....and timing...always timing. One thing I really lack is finesse. I work so hard on the technical aspect of playing that I haven't explored the mental/psychological part which brings in the emotion and "feeling" in what your playing. Not to mention loosing the "ugly face of concentration" ! Lol....I cringe when I see that in these vids and have been working on relaxing the face. Anyway, I just thought you might be interested in seeing how things are progressing with this. I'm open to any suggestions/critique you may have to offer as well. Thanks Beth !

dear Beth. would there be any value in dipping into susuki even though I started a year ago. I am not bothered about the cost of the books if i knew they would help me. [also which ones]. I am a bit clueless about it. My main book has been Violin for Dummies which is good. regards Mike

G'day Beth! :-)

I believe that I am not playing Allegro (Suzuki Book I) correctly and I could use your help. The piece uses Staccato and Legato bow strokes. While I believe that I got the Legato bowing correctly, I think I am not doing the Staccato bowing quite right. Could you please give me some tips and/or exercises so that I can learn to do theStaccato bowing correctly? Many thanks!

Hi Beth, question......Wohlfhart book #2 page 24..... At the second measure into the 4th are those dotted notes and shifts. I keep creeping up the fingerboard playing the dotted notes and shifting until I just about run out of bow and the notes I'm playing get weak and ineffective. How should this be played so that I don't keep creeping up the fingerboard ? I try to give a good long pull at the dotted notes, but can't seem to give it enough. Thanks so much !

So much to work on ....soooo much to learn ! Where does one focus ? I feel like I'm trying to work on so much all at once that I'm not really getting anywhere with any of it ! Frustration mounts....I want to be so much better than I am.....I really would like personal lessons from someone like you Beth on a weekly basis...but the pocketbook doesn't allow. Thank you for your competent teaching and your graciousness and for making this help available at such a reasonable cost so that folks like me can have a chance at this. :-)

Could you please fill in the blank in the following question? Andres, assuming that you are proficient in all previous lessons, by the time you reach Lesson #____ you should be playing without fingerboard tapes. I would like to set a goal for removing the tapes. I do understand that it is probably not that easy. Thanks, Andy
