Hi Beth, those new videos you added as reply to discussions (harmonics & g string) don't seem to show up in the video lessons library. Shouldn't they be there too?

A funny story apropos to our discussion on harmonics…and a bit ironic as well.

Last night at opera (Austin Lyric Opera production of “Flight”) I and my stand partner, the retired concertmaster of the Austin Symphony and UT violin professor were about an 1 ½ hours into the 3 hour opera. The passage was a long line of harmonics, notated with the irritating “o” above the sounding pitch. There was one harmonic lasting 6 beats or so and for whatever reason I couldn’t figure out how to play it. My concentration completely unhinged, my hand went darting up and down the fingerboard on various strings trying desperately to find it. I was a little deer lost in the forest deciding which path to take. My thoughts going something like “Hmmmm…I’m playing that as a fingered harmonic…no…that’s 2 octaves above the pitch…maybe it’s the first harmonic on the G string…or is it the second harmonic on the D string….let’s try here..” On and on it went in this ballooned time of 6 slow beats. Well my stand partner witnessed my befuddlement out of the corner of his eye and was involuntarily sent into silent convulsions of irrepressible laughter. I joined in, and for a good 2 or 3 minutes we were paralyzed, shaking in our chairs hoping not to be seen.

Fortunately, we were in a dark orchestra pit near the back and not on a well lit stag. He later said he had never been that out of control in a concert in his entire life. I told him of the irony…that I had just made a tutorial on harmonics. He suggested I go back and watch it!

Hi Beth!

Now that the end of 2nd suzuki book is coming, I'm wondering, have you shot any material on trills? (or going to?)
Sure I can produce "trill like" sound, but when concerning violin, it's better to know what I'm doing instead of guessing...at least I haven't encountered very many things on my violin journey which would have been obvious :)

Hi Beth, I'm thinking of buying a violin. I am using a rental which is 4/4. I need to stretch my arm a bit to get to the bow tip on D, G strings (need a smaller violin?); but when doing upbow on E, my thumb knuckle often hits the violin body and it seems that I need more room or to consciously adjust the angle. (smaller violin would make this situation worse?) Would it be easier to do vibrato, on high notes, on a smaller violin? In videos, you mentioned your violin is 7/8. How do I determine what's the best size for me? Thank you!

Hi Beth!

I'm in the process of trying to learn a song for my Austin 2012 repertoire and I was wondering if you could help me understand how to play the following notations:

AND

I get totally bogged down when I see notations such as these as I am not only learning to read music, but also trying to understand how to actually play the indicated composer's instructions.

Being a beginner can be so overwhelming at times. ;-o

Many thanks!

I couldn't find the discussion thread about harmonics, so am posting it at the top. Jego's question about playing more comfortably on the G string is in the discussion below. I'll be uploading more videos these next few days.

Is the location of the tapes all the same for different size violins or are they different?

Hi!

Could you Beth, or anyone, give some advice on violin tuning system?

I purchased interesting app for iPhone: Pitch primer. It displays a real time graph how accurately I'm playing + much more.

Anyway, problem is that there is not much info on their website how to set it up for violin.

Violin is tuned in "Just intonation" right?

In addition to that, there are settings for A (I use 442), "Root" and "scale". Root and scale are the big guestions, what should I use? Options are:
Root: any note, natural, sharp or flat.
scale: chromatic, major, minor, major triad, minor triad.

I have no clue what those mean :)
